Show Hi lip Mr. and Mrs. Thoron Geddes announce the en- 111 gagemontment of their daughter Jonna-Budd to Kg; Hooper Cameron Dunbar, of Log Angeles. I The above announcement will prove to be the j i greatest surprise of the many to which the smart BE set has been treated during the summer. 1 Both of the young people have friends innu- I; morable here where they have lived all their Bij lives. Since her debut a year ago Miss Geddes llj has been one of the most popular belles in the I 1 1 younger sot; and Mr. Dunbar is equally well Weed. I '. , Miss Geddes is a beauty of the blonde type, and I ,j j with it has a fine personality and charm of man- B J nor. The marriage will unite two of the oldest I ; I and best Salt Lalco families. In wishing them all B U happiness the only rogort is that they will not Big make their home in this city. By The date of the wedding has not been dofi- I i j nitoly sot, but it will take place In the very near I if future. I f f & & B , h The divorce microbe has again taken posses- B ' 'J sion of Hart McKeo, but this time the mix up Is B ' ' ? his own menage and not in another man's af- B j fairs. B A cable from Paris announces that Mrs McKee I who was formerly Cornelia Baxter, the Denver I ; ( beauty, has instituted divorce proceedings in a B lj French court alleging cruelty and making other B 3 1 sensational oharges. B ti t The fair Cornelia is certainly a star perform- Bj; er when it comes to using up surplus newspaper Bjpj space, and the Princess Chimay herself never Bfjjj made suoh persistent demands on the passion ed- Bjdi itors of the press as this sensation loving girl Bp! from the golden wes.t Bj First a hundred miles of print on the jilting of B ' Gerald Hughes, as many more on the marrying i ' of Hugh Tovis, a year of "flimsy" to the telegraph B j ; desks preceeding the landing of McKee, and B j witli tlie divorce and remarriage, we will get an-B'N an-B'N other dose for two years if the lady retains her I j health. Br! As my old friend Tim McGrath remarks: "This I ; sporting life is hell." ) & & j' Major Stanton has won another victory, and 1 1'. Mr. and Mrs. William Nye, of San Francisco, are ij loser one sixteen-year-old daughter, who will spend I i the winter in Goldfield up on Sundog avenue ' where the major has his cosy home. B She is now Mrs. Stanton and besides being H an old man's darling she will be a nice plays' play-s' mate for the major's charming daughter who is ft not more than a year or two her senior, ft The struggle of the major to enjoy a secure ft position on the battlefield or matrimony has been a valiant one for more than a year, and his friends will rejoice in his victory. The major has made a lot of money in Gold-field Gold-field and was considered among the buds of the Nevada metropolis to be one of the catches of the season. From the Little Florence lease alone, the veteran commander of the fire department receives re-ceives some twenty-five hundred simoloons every two weeks, enough indeed to keep the wolf from flitting in and out among the Joshua trees that adorn the major's dooryard. & & & Mrs James L. Franken, Miss Margaret Park ' " ' , ; Miss Jenna.Budd Gtddcs whose engagement to Mr. Hooper Dunbar is announced. and Miss Minnie Klesel, who have spent the summer sum-mer In the Orient, will bo home about the first of September, having sailed on the "Persia" the first of the week. v'5 There hasn't a word appeared from those who have been decrying the baneful influence of the Teddy Bear habit anent the taking of the children to the circus. Surely if the fondling of the Ted- i dy Bears means a clogging of the maternal spirit, a trip, to the circus would certainly kill it for all time to come, and mothers with the temerity to take . their impressionable offspring to see the , menagerie should be dealt with accordingly. & & Captain and Mrs. Sydney Cloman Mrs Cloman was formerly Mrs. Flora Clement are in trouble, with an English court, their chauffeur having knocked a follow over whilo driving their motor car. Upon the arrest of the driver, tho . captain ' wrote a note. to the judge stating that. foreign attaches at-taches and the people of their household wero free from arrest, and that it was very embai-rassing embai-rassing for him to have his man arrested for colliding col-liding with an English law. Whereupon, the jurist immediately fined the $ driver enough to lend additional interest to the caso, and cause him to bo more careful in the future. ' By the way, the. Clomans are outting quite a swath in the English capital, their names appearing appear-ing among "those presont" almost daily in the notices of large events in London society. & & & It was amusing to hear aw oman who like to bo classed, among the younger matrons, airing her views at the Country Club the other evening regarding the present day impertinence of a number num-ber of her gentlemen friends who, when she asks them to dine, invariably ask, "Who's going to bo there?" She has never stopped to reflect that in a groat measure she is responsible for thoir caution, cau-tion, and even if she wore not it is a nice thing to know, for it Isn't exactly an honor to be invitod where one is expected merely to fill in, and it certainly isn't a pleasure to dine with everybody. After a man has been watching the dinner courses and saying the same old things at the same old places fourteen or fifteen years, he has earned the right to provide against unpleasant surprises. The opening night at the Orpheum brought out most of the real flrBt nlghters who were in town, and the array of talent in the audience Included In-cluded nearly all of tho younger members of the Four Thousand. Of course there wore a lot of the , nice folks who seldom miss a Monday night, otherwise other-wise engaged, as Tom Schumacher was in town and sat at the head of a beautiful dinner at the Alta Club. The boxes at tho theatre woro tho centre of attraction on Monday. Tho handsome women on the right of tho house unconsciously drew the attention at-tention of everyone, and opposite, tho pretty Van Cott girls were included in many a compliment. i Aside from tholr good looks those young ladies havo a little more than their share of cleverness ' an asset that has served to make them particularly particu-larly popular with everyone. & & & M Mr. and Mrs. A. Fred Wey announce the on- gagomont of their daughter Louise to Mr. Vaughn A. Paul, the wedding to take place In September. & & & Nothing sensational has bobbed up in society for a month or two, and just to enliven proceedings proceed-ings while the fast set Is resting, why doesn't some enterprising person get up a stag dinner with seat's for spectators, and charge admission, tho proceeds to go to charity? It has been suggested that the personnel of tho party bo as follows: John Crltchlow, Malcolm McAllister, Frank Sofrit, Leltoy Armstrong, 'William Igloheart, Elliott El-liott Kelly, and a referee to be selected at the ff- ringside. jt Mrs. Lawrence Townsend entertained at a lake party on Tuesday in honor of her sons Law-ronce Law-ronce and Reginald, who are home for a few weeks. After a sail on the lake tho party landed on Antelope island, where they lunched, later returning re-turning to Saltalr to spend the evening. tC Mrs. Sam Adams, of Denver, was the guest of honor at a luncheon at the Country club on Wednesday, Wed-nesday, given by Mrs. W. P. Kiser. After tho luncheon bridge was enjoyed by some and discussed by others. Mr. and Mrs. Kiser will entertain en-tertain at a dinner at the Country club tonight. It is to be regretted that so many of the Four Thousand have taken to the earring habit after the manner of their eastern sisters, where the former fashion has had quite a vogue of late. Most women don't know It, but the savage ornaments orna-ments spoil tho beauty of nearly everyone, and they certainly make a woman ten years older in appearance. : & Among the Salt Lake girls who will enter the eastern schools this year are Miss Margaret Walker and Miss Virginia Beatty. Miss Walker will enter Miss Bennett's school In Now York, and Miss Beatty, Dana Hall, a prep for Welles-ley. Welles-ley. Fisher Harris, muoh improved in health and with tho same old sunshine in the place it won't ' come off, has returned from tho mountains and i is at his desk again, much to the delight of his large circle of friends. t ! Mr. and Mrs. Addison Cain entertained at the ' Commercial Club on Tuesday in honor of Mr. and j Mrs. F. R. Cain of Chicago. A dozen guosts en- J joyed the affair. & & Mrs. David Murray has as her guest at Whitehall, White-hall, her sister Mm. Marix and her little daughter, j & & & ' One of the pleasantoat affairs of the week was 1 a beautiful luncheon given at the Lagoon on Tuesday in honor of Department Commander and 1 Mrs. Alfred Kent. It was G. A. R. day at tho pretty resort, and Mr. and Mrs. Hugh McMillan took advantage of the occasion to entertain Mrs. McMillan's parents and about twenty of their , friends. i & & J Miss Leslie Woodruff has half a dozen of her friends visiting her at tho Woodruff cottage at I Brighton. 'j & & u Mrs. Hal Russell (Ada Dwyer) has returned ! to New York after spending the summer with her ij parents. Her season will open in New York in j September with Miss Robson in "Salomy Jane." I |
