Show Hypecrlttcal. Tho New York Herald Insists that it is wrong to say that a steamship sails; that only a craft .rigged with sails, soils; that a steamer steams. Well, before there wore sails and boats used only oars, what did tho boat do? Did it just oar? Why was tho canvas first used .to propel a boat called a sail? When a great bird on muffled wings slowly beats its way, why is it said that "she sails"? And as sails are useless and help-loss help-loss in a calm, as a sail ship's motive power is wind, why not say that tho ship Albatros winded for Liverpool yesterday? When a boat has no power it floats. When a ii : power of any Jdnd, oars, sails or steam, is applied, then the boat sails. How would it sound to tho Herald were -the marine editor to include in his copy something like this: "Mr. Smith's yacht Cora Bslle gasolined for Albany yesterday." Or "Alderman Von Stuyvosant's yacht Gretchen naphthaed for the lower bay last evening." Or "Mayor McOlel-lan's McOlel-lan's launch Fairy electrocuted for a trip up the river." The Herald is too fine boned. |
