Show The Wonderful Wireless. Was not that a wonderful event wired from San Francisco on Monday morning? The operator opera-tor of the wireless was waiting at his station on Mare Island when a call came. As he turned to receive the message, very likely he wondered whether it was from San Francisco, thirty miles away, or from Los Angeles, 500 milos away, or from some ship beating its way in from across the sea. But when ho began to read: "Flag ship Connecticut, off Teuhuantopec, 9 a. m., March 9th," he at once sat up and began to take notice. Sure enough, it was Admiral Evans' bat- tleship, 2,000 miles away, calling to San Fran-ciso Fran-ciso and telling the news of the fleet, as though tho big uhlp was already looking out for its destination des-tination and, as a traveler nearlng home, stops at a wayside station and wires that he is on the way, the modern leviathan was announcing over the waste of waters and the long stretch of shore, that it was coming. And its message was that one of the strong, exultant hearts in tho fleet, that had been looking look-ing forward to the visit to San Francisco with so many fond expectations, had ceased to beat, and some family on Monday evening was in mourning mourn-ing for the boy that had found a grave in the sea. The news had come on the air currents, but was brought safely, even to the spelling of the name. It Is the marvel of inventions, nothing so wonderful won-derful was ever before evolved from a human brain. And science has still many a closed door waiting for the genius of man to open. Each seems more wonderful than its predecessor. When the final door swings back, what will be revealed? |
