Show HEAVY LOSSES OF LIBRARIES. H Librarian Moore of the Berkeley H public library recently received from H the state librarian at Sacramento a H pamphlet showing the damage done R to libraries throughout the state by mi flre or earthquake. From points out- B side San Francisco come the following H statements of loss: Santa Rosa, $25,- H 000, Carnegie library building badly H damaged, but can be strengthened and H restored; San Mateo, building badly H damaged and condemned; Hay wards, B $1,750 damage to library building; B Martinez, $1,400 damage to ?7,000 B building; Oakland, $3,000 damage to B $80,000 building; Redwood City, build- B Ing runined, loss $5,000; Berkeley, B $2)0 loss to building. B The University of California suffered B the loss of 1,000 volumes, which were B at a bindery in San Francisco, and B about 250 volumes which were in the B hands of ofllcers and students. B The San Francisco public library B lost three-fourths of the 160,000 vol- B umes contained in the main building B and its branches. These books were B insured for $10,000. All tne buildings B are gone except two branch library B buildings valued at $53,000. The de- stroyed buildings were valued at $25,- B 000 and carried $15,000 insurance. B Librarian J. C. Rowell of the Uni- B versity of California has received or- B fers of aid from various universities B throughout the country.
