Show WARM. July had some pretty hot days and a few of the nights were not a bit frosty. The sun spots were eviedntly getting in their work. There were no heat prostrations that we heard of, but it was prostrating weather all the same. The temper tem-per of many people was sorely tried, and there were a dozen companies in which the weather signal men would not have been safe for a minute. A good many flowers withered under the heat and we suspect that some of the fruit was scalded on the trees. Much profanity was exhausted in trying try-ing to explain the situation. A gentleman took the train for the south one evening last week. It was crowded and many people were standing in the aisles. He noted two rather stout ladies in the crush who were quietly crying, their sufferings from the heat were so great. He says he was warm before he saw them, but seeing them made him hot clear through. It was a tough spell. We hope it will not be repeated this year. |
