Mark Twain dislikes the novels of Walter Scott. He thinks that the spirit of chivalry that these novels inculcate in-culcate is a bad thing for modern times. "It was a silly age, the age of chivalry," said Mr. Clemens not long since. "Its thoughts were silly, and its customs were silly. I like to see it held up to ridicule, not to admiration. admira-tion. "I am in sympathy, therefore, with a remark that old George Carter once made. George was smoking his pipe by the kitchen stove while his daughter daugh-ter read aloud a historical novel about Richard Coeur de Lion. '"Then the noble knight threw his glove in the face of the craven earl,' red the young woman. "George looked up, interested. '"What did he do that for?' he asked. ' 'To insult him, of course,' said the reader. "George chuckled. " 'Well; said he, in a superior tone, 'I think that there would have been more sense in his conduct if he had kept his fist in the glove at the time of throwing it.' " Rosenbautn "I dinned wit Eckstein last night. Very swell affair silver spoons." Cohen (incredulously) Not real silver?" Rosenbaum "Real solid silver, s-.help me!" Cohen (still incredulous) "Show us one." The Tatlcr. Senator Depew, at a dinner in Washington, was praising the wit of women. "Against this wit," he said, "we men are powerless. Even when all the right and logic of an argument are on our side, woman with her wit will nine times out of ten put us to shame. "Thus a man once found that his wife had bought a few puffs of false hair. This displesed him. He hid in. the hall one day, and, just as the ,lady was fixing the false puffs upon her brow, he darted in upon her. j " 'Mary,' he said reproachfully, 'why do you put the hair of another woman on your head?' " 'Wh ,' his wife answered, 'do you put the skin of another calf on your hands?'" |
