Show SUGAR TARIFF petition pres coolidge to retain the present tariff on sugar business men of this state through the associated industries saturday petitioned president coolidge to retain tho present tariff on sugar on the ground that the raising 0 of sugar beets is the most dependable source of income to the people of this state the following is a copy 0 of the telegram gi am dispatched to the president probably in no other activity in the intermountain country has made so great a contribution to our welfare and general prosperity as has the beet sugar indu stry lour citizens must muse therefore view with arave rave concern any movement which has within it il even the possibility of oe weakening that important industry for years during the fluctuation of 0 prices in other farm products the money derived from sugar beets has been the main source of dependable revenue not only to the beet growers but b ut to hundreds of oe communities we appreciate that we are not in a position to compete in the sugar industry with countries where the standard of living is lower and recognize the wisdom ot of the government in providing the necessary protection to this industry in the form ot of a tariff that is intended to equalize those conditions dit ions the sugar factory in utah and idaho has rapidly become the renter center around which communities are being built and we cannot believe that with these facts in mind our government will recede from its present position of having due regard tor for the prosperity and well being of 0 its hundreds of oc thousands of citizens and taxpayers concerned in the preservation and development of this most essential agricultural industry |
