the boy scouts who for the past ten days had been enjoying a trip through yellowstone park the boys return well without the slightest accident oc curing during the entire trip as well as being much the wiser in every way the outing may be termed a complete success on monday morning july the party started from the court house it included eighty nine scouts fifteen officers which brought the total to one hundred and sixteen the end ot of the first day found them at idaho falls where they were treated very well by the people mayor lewis of that city came down to the camping grounds and greeted the boys at thu the end of 0 the second lap encampment was vas made at the old faithful geyser the following morning under the direction of a forest ranger visited many of the interesting points in the fire hole geyser basin this whole valley is lines with geysers of varying size and innumerable hot springs this same valley contains the famous paint pots which look like boiling seething masses of colored mud one of the hot springs has been sounded tor for depth and at twelve hundred feet showed no sign of bottom t bupt apt skidmore remarked that a person might be able to dive to china via the spring but would be rather hard boiled boiled when he arrived there the great point ot of interest at this place is the old faithful geyser every sixty five minutes from a hole about tour four feet by two feet this dependable old geyser shoots forth great volumes of water to a height of about one hundred feet another geyser ot of great from nce is the giant geyte gey berr r this monster plays very irregular once in from six to fourteen days but when it does A 1 throws water to the remarkable height of two hundred and fifty feet and keeps flowing tor for almost an hour after spending two nights at old faithful camp was broken and all headed tor for the grand canyon of the yellowstone river kiver the continental divide was crossed at a height of feet and right on the very top was a beautiful little lake trimmed with yellow miles lillies the procession halted for lunch on oil yellowstone Yell owston lake the lake Is an inspiration in itself its shore lines measures a hundred miles the waters are a clear blue and hemmed in on every side by dense forests of stately pines fringing its sandy shore a are hot springs and the story is true that you can catch fish in the lake and toss them over to the springs and the company was then moved to the camping grounds at canyon next morning with a ranger as a guide again the boys were taken to see the tha grand canyon and the upper and lower falls ot of the river the upper palls falls are one hundred and nine teet feet high and the lower falls plunge downward a distance ot of three hundred and eight teet feet most of the scouts descended the stairs chiseled in the cliffs down the almost perpendicular sides ot of the gorge worn out by the river and gained access to an unequal led view ot of the immense body of water rushing over the brink of the falls alls resembling vast strands of 0 hair dashing ing downward only to be lost in the thick mist arising from the level of the river an exceptional view 0 of the canyon ad falls was obtained at artists point about a mile down the river the river from the top ot of the gorge looks like a small brooklet its depth Is over seven hundred feet and its sides are tinted with almost every color ot of the rainbow and presented a sight worth coming the whole distance A like view Is enjoyed from inspiration point about two miles below the tails falls on the next lap of the journey many inhere interesting sting things were seen the caravan passed just under mount washburn which ascends to a height of teet feet and fornis forma the south east part of an enormous extinct volcano it Is fifteen miles mccross the crater of this historic volcano which once belched inconceivable quantities of 0 lavo lave for distances of hundreds of continued on page three BOY SCOUTS RETURN FROM yellowstone Coti linued froat fr oat first page fuse miles it has hae been so long since it was active that now it Is completely covered with forests tower falls was also a wonderful sight bight here the gorge of the yellowstone river Is decorated with pi picturesque chur palisades caused by lava iava flows and the falls mentioned drop over the edge of the gorge directly into the river at roosevelt encampment was made again sunday morning the boys were led by another ranger to a beaufi beautiful ful little lake nestling in a valley with monstrous pines on every side and a sunday school was held during the afternoon the company was fortunate in obtaining a close up of a herd ot of antelope this is a rare thing because these little li atle animals dont like to be near people last monday morning the homeward journey began going north by way of mammoth ammoth Al hot springs another of natures wonders was seen these springs have built a veritable mountain from which they spout and large streams of boiling water flow down the sides of the mountains which has been formed from the mineral deposited from the water at the present the precipitate is almost white with a scattering of blue brown and reddish hues the exit from the park was by wal of the norris geyser basin which is is a miniature repetition of the firehole Fire hole liole basin much of the wild animal life of the park has become tame and as a result the boys saw many bears some of which would haunt the highways and stop cars to get candy meat or whatever the occupants of the cars might have leave to give them standing on oil their haunches while they received it many herds of deer and elk were seen and mountain sheep and buffalo the fishing was good one string of ity seven was brought into camp cam by tour four of the party on tuesday the camp tor for the night was made at blackfoot and the following day the last part of the trip was finished by getting to brigham by way of the cache
