Show In Memory of Charles Popper AT a recent meeting of Utah Lodge No. 1, I. O. O. F., a committee presented a series of touching resolutions of eulogy for the late Charles Popper, who died in New York on the 5th of September last. Mr. Popper was a principal prin-cipal ip. establishing the lodge here in July, 18G5, and was a charter member up to the time of his death. Mr. Popper was a pioneer in the West. He was one of the royal band that planted the first stakes on the Comstock and dedicated "West-em "West-em Nevada to civilization. Later he came here and under the conditions that ruled here then helped found both an Odd Fellows and Masonic lodge, where those of the two brotherhoods could have meeting places when an iron rule was here and Gentiles were under a ban. From here he went to Idaho when that, too, was well nigh a wilderness, and storming the hills wrenched from them a fortune. He, too, was a pioneer in West-era West-era Colorado, everywhere the eager, strong, earnest ear-nest man whose work and example was always for good. His home was here for many years, and when he left it for the broader field of the East, he kept most of his heart here, for it was hero his children were born, here was his anchor when he was making his hardest strugglo for a fortune and a home, and once a year he came back until age and sorrow begaa to tell upon him. It Is most appropriate that his fellow lodge men should recount the story of his life and his work and lay it a wreath upon his grave. |
