Show sketch of the life of pres john W hess by wm M miller lIer editor news TREMONTON july 16 1924 A iless hess reunion was held at lagoon on the lath dinst to commemorate comine the one hundredth of 0 the birth ot of john W hess president hess was born august 24 1824 in pennsylvania he died in farmington Farin ington dec 1903 with his lathers fathers family he joined the church in 1831 1834 he passed thru the troubles ot of missouri and illinois he married emelene bigler in 1345 in 1846 he joined the mormon Bat battalion tallon and marched as tar far as santa fe where on account ot of sickness he was compelled to stop tor for the winter in 1847 be came to the salt lake valley ar riving four our days after the pioneers he first settled at milt mill creek he moved to farmington in 1849 where he resided the remainder of his life II 11 he e served as bishop ot of the farmington f ward for or 27 years when he was chosen 1st ast counselor to pres wm win R smith ot of the davis stake atter after presidents ld ants smiths death he was made president of 0 the stake which tion he held until his death he served in the stake presidency for 22 or 23 20 years making nearly 50 years of 0 service for hla his church ile he tilled filled one I 1 mission to the states he served as advisory counselor to the Wa washakie Wash akle indian mission for about 10 years he I 1 led a band of 0 farmington and willard farmers in the settlement ot of the bear river flat which now composes the fielding district in 1877 he was waa a leading farmer in that district tor for 20 years many of his sons and sonin son in ln laws lawa came and helped to settle this I 1 new district he served three terms term I 1 in the legislation as well as tilling many other civic positions he helped to build the U P and utah central railroads so we find his life to have been one grest great big lite life ot of service service to his big church service to his state service to ills his nation and service to his tel fei low men president hess had 65 child children rez 1 47 of whom were alive at the time ot of his death there are more than 1000 of its his posterity living today about ot of his posterity gathered at the lagoon resort on the where a good time was had two of his wives caroline and francis were the honored guests as was his brother david hess who is past 87 years old A good program was rendered speeches were by jed M hess master 0 of ceremonies gov bamberger Bambe reer president J H robinson of the south davis stake and arthur hess they told 0 of the great life of this great pioneer I 1 have heard many people say that president hess had more power in administration than any man they had lever ever met and hundreds can testify of 0 his great help in times ot of sickness knes and trouble are we his descendents going to carry on this great service are we going to teach our children and grand children that to obtain a real happiness or reward in this life we must first render service to earn itt it are we going to teach them that our reward in the life to come will be governed by th abe service we render in this life my hope is that we will carry on this service so as to earn a reward for or ourselves and so add honor to our great sire ig F i lk I 1 V 40 m t V k JOHN W HESS |
