Show i Thanksgiving Day ' $ IV T EXT Thursday wI11 be Thanksgiving day. I Surely Salt Lake and Utah have much to be thankful for. The past year has been filled irlth blesBlngs. The words of the Psalmist are appropriate: "Thou hast annointed my head with oil, my cup runneth over." General good health has prevailed, the harvests from field and mine have been very great; while floods and droughts and hurricanes have affected more or less, all the country outside, every day in j Utah has been one on which the working man i could pursue his calling out of doors, without dis comfort. This city has grown beyond all precedent prece-dent during the year past; all the premonitions are for a still greater growth in the year to come. The year has seen many triumphs. The great encampment of the Grand Army was a most pronounced pro-nounced success; the visit of the President must have left many pleasant memories in his mind, and given him new impressions of the material ' power of the state as a factor in the Union; an other transcontinental railroad has come and made this one of its most important stations; new fields liave been put under cultivation; new mines have taken their places as dividend-payers; new enterprises have crystalized into form; new incentives in-centives have been offered to strangers to come here and engage in the work of making a greater city and greater state, and new grand assurances I have been given that in due time Utah will be in full line with her sister states, and be keeping I perfect step with the others to the sublime music ' of the Union. New school houses have been ! built and occupied; the great new cathedral has ' been dedicated and will this year ring out Its Christmas chimes. There are a multitude of new children for the school houses, a multitude more people to listen to the chants and carols. A good many of those we love have been called by death, but this is but dn the course of nature, and we ! may, while thankful for blessings, likewise be consoled with the thought that those loved ones i have entered into their rest. |
