Show Minifig JVote: THEiSSHOOL OF MINES. When two farmers own five acres of land each, In the uesert, and jointly own a stream that supplies sup-plies just enough water to irrigate five acres, the result is, generally, an all summer's quarrel and no crop for either farmer. One thinks of that while watching the struggle between the University Univer-sity and Agricultural College for the appropriation appropria-tion for the school of mines, and the attempt to divide it if it cannot all go to one school. Our thought is that it should not be divided, that it should all go one way, and that a first class school should be built up. If later it seems well to have another school, and the state becomes rich enough to support it, all right, but not now. As to which school should have the appropriation now, it seems to us that the right idea was entertained enter-tained by the Constitutional convention, when it piovided how such a school might be established. It foreshadowed attaching the school to the University, and the reasons for that decision were as apparent then as now. First it is right in the line of University teaching. We do not think that any such a course of study has ever been attached at-tached to an Agricultural College. Of course this in itself would not count, if other things favored the claim or the Logan school, but there are manifold mani-fold reasons why the course of study should be perfected here rather than at Logan. Salt Lake is in the very center of the great mining industry of the state. There is no other town that has anything any-thing like the advantages of this city except Provo, and Provo has no parent school to attach the school of mines to. A class could leave this city after breakfast and visit any mine in either of six mining districts, examine the property, and, icturning, reach this city before dinner the same day. Again, this city is the center of the mining business of the state. It all gravitates here; it is to this point that ore and bullion are sent; here is where supplies are bought; it is to this place that samples of ore are sent for assay and analysis; analy-sis; here is where a great cabinet should be gathered gath-ered for the benefit of visiting business and scientific scien-tific men and delegations; here four daily papers herald the mining discoveries and achievements in reducing ores; here mining promoters and Investors Invest-ors congregate and finally the convenience of men engaged in the leading industry of the state should be consulted, for without mining Utah would be little more than a great, but indifferent stock range. Then every possible advantage should be given the school, for its course of study offers better rewards for students than any other, and in this mining center the school should be made equal or superior to the best of those attached to eastern universities. vt vJ The Texas Mining company was organized in this city during the week, the property of which lies about three miles east of Bountiful. Considerable Consid-erable development has been done on the property, prop-erty, which consists of eight claims and some high grade ore has been uncovered. & & & Mr. Will J. Lawrence was successful in interesting inter-esting both Messrs. Kimberley and Buhl in properties prop-erties in which he is interested, prior to their departure de-parture to the east. The claims are known as the Scottish Chief, in the Park City district, and the Lawrence Consolidated, near Mountain Home, Idaho. & & & A bear attack on Daly-West on the Boston market mar-ket caused a decided slump In the value of that stock on the local exchange the past week. & & & The annual report of Manager Lloyd of the Copper Ranch company is virtually a request to have the shareholders advance more money for tne further development of the property which lies between the O. K. and Old Hickory mines oft he Majestic company. w jt&v c A most encouraging report was submitted at the annual meeting of the Martha Wasnington company. com-pany. The board of directors and the officers remain re-main the same, with the exception of Joseph Oberndorfer, who was elected vice president. & tje A body of 40 per cent copper ore has been uncovered on teh 300-foot level of the Star Consolidated Con-solidated of Tintic. tw cfi y Recent development work at the Independence property at Pike's diggings has discovered a new ledge, bearing first class gold and silver values. t5 ? to Orders have been placed for an extensive equipment equip-ment for the Comet mine of the Imperial company. |
