Show ? den getter9. if J ' Ogdon, Utah, June 13th, 1902. Ljj j There is a book on its way to a birthday in i l, Ogden town which will contain the favorite quota- B j "'I; I tions of Ogden people. It may not be worth this H , free ad but, unless the author has been imposed B I' fi ' upon, the book should be a literary and mental index B I V to the best minds of the junction city. For in- H p 'V stance take Col. Hayes. His favorite quotation, as Bl i ;JL he looks, toward "that beautiful island of Alaska," m ",!'tkj is supposed to be: B j I'J "Of all sad words of tongue or pen B !" The saddest are these: It might have been." B , . j,, But it is not. Instead, he favors the lines written B kt' j- by Cy Warman to Pete McCourt: B j j ' "You'll have to turn that face to the wall." B'"' 'iM And Murphy. Anyone would naturally think his Bj ' f!' favorite quotation was the "Song of Solomon," but m j ' I therenevcr was a greater error. His favorite is H I1 'It" found in Bret Ilartc's "Don Diego ot the South." B 1 1 jt j ju But wait till the book is published.. It will be worth B '- ' the appetite whetted by expcctcncy. B -up m i'i 'f There is quiet game of catch-as-catch can going m s jiti on just now between the Republican and Democratic B 'L county committees in regard to the nomination of HU!''i'! a candidate for county superintendent of schools. Hm; n jji The school law contemplates a non-partisan elec- HJHfl; ', j;!' tion and neither party wishes to go on record as jj !, j forcing school matters into partisan politics. The H ' 1 i Democrats favor a non-partisan convention for the HBUJii reason that they believe the present incumbent, IH yj"1 fi ' Wilson, a Democrat, can win. The Republicans say H d ' j that Wilson has had it two terms and the Democrats " T n ! should not act the hog. They further say they favor 1 ' ; ' a non-partisan convention if the Democrats will , ! concede the nomination of a Republican. So partis- anship is mixed up with non-partisanship, and neither side knows where it is at. The election oc- H curs early in July. HB H l The probability is that Wilson cares not a fig M whether the election is partisan or not. He has Hv( ' made himself strong with the people during the M j, ; four years he has held office and he is no doubt able 1 , to show a clean pair of heels to any Republican Hl "' ambitious enough to take a whirl at a campaign. H ' I'll The Republicans know this and they fear a Wilson H ", victory in a partisan election because it would in- H f( spire the Democrats with more courage than they I!'' lost when Senator Shurtliff voted for Geo. Q. Can- non. A victory makes a Democrat hilarious; a do- V I feat puts him out of the business. And so the cjiew- ' '' ing of the rag continues and neither the Democrats j ' I nor Republicans know where they are going to get H ! j off. The Democrats feel the safer, as they say they HH $Ml 1 have got a winner no matter which way the political H 1 1 J ' cat jumps. ik 8 , The Republican candidates are W. F. Patterson, H ' Alma H. Rogers, and Robert N. Ames. In his own ip mind, each is the man of the hour. Patterson lives Hi "; in Ogdon city, but Attorney General Brecden says B fj that fact does not bar him from running for of- HB H ' fice in the county. He is young, competent, a stud- HHB SyJ. ' cut, and very much interested in school work. Rogers nHH' has more nerve than judgment to butt into the HHhHIH fight. For him there can be but one outcome. He HHH IS B w ack among the pines. Ames has age and HraHHR experience in his favor. I might also say religion, HShjHmP as he latelly joined the Mormon church. If his bap- HHmHhi tism into the faith and yearning for ollice had not HJJMBJJm 1 come so close together the delegates woulu take him HHrawj more seriously. That leaves the Republicans behind wBB Pcttcrson and the Dcmociats behind Wilson. May HHttffii the best man win! li SB In the language of the street urchin who knows, BMl the Republican politicians are "all shot to pieces." BHHHfli This calamity was caused by a juncture of Saturn HBHVHV with Uranus in the house of Venus, Saturn in the ascendoncy and Uranus between the fires of Arcturus and the waters of Neptune in other words the devil and the deep sea. That is to say a little bird brought word from the Republicans of Provo that the gold brick which Smoot handed Kearns in the shape of an announcement of his senatorial candidacy, candid-acy, was moulded for the occasion and handed out after calm deliberation. The fact seems to be that Smoot's Republican friends in Provo don't trust Kearns and they are the boys who pursuaded Smoot to try the smoking out process on the Senator. The Provo Republicans are all for Smoot; and they claim, whereas, Kearns buncoed Smoot out of the senatorship two years ago, Resolved He shall not have the opportunity to do so again. Selah! So the method in Smopt's apparent madness is not without merit. Instead of a piece of political folly, it seems the action of Jbhe Utah county candidate can-didate was wise beyond recognition. It is only just to Reed to say that he refuses to be interviewed and says neither yea nor nay.. It is his friends who are doing the cackling. They claim that he is going to beat the race without a running mate and that Kearns will not be for Smoot, should he choose to mix in the fight. Hence these tears. That is why the Republican bosses of Weber make frequent trips to Salt Lake and come back shaking their heads in doubt.. They don't understand the new deal and they can't find out as the peepstone is not working. With Smoot and Kearns working cross-wise what a predicament the heelers will be in hunting for the band wagon. And how will the new state of things affect the next convention and the state committee? No wonder the politicians are shot to pieces! |
