Show I k fill ' the Golf 'BalU and High BalU. ft ! Bi H u 1H Many people wondered how they were going H ii ! 1 to see "The Devil's Disciple" and also attend H w w tllG McCornick dance. It took clever Hemic Read H ll ! ll and foxy George Topliff to solve the difficult H jj s problem. Top knew Nethersole, so in his finest H r I! IP 1Ine o hot air lie trIe(1 to get In to see tho re afl $ hearsal. Miss Read wanted to peek also, but Neth- m ' , I ersole said no. All the persuasive powers of the B I !i I , two could not change the manager, until sudden- i I ' ly he had a thought. M) I 1 ! "I know how we can get past Miller," he said, m I c "if you're game." H ! t , "' "Well?" m I "There's a mob scene in the fourth act, will B , I v you two supe?" B h ! V "Well I hope I will," came in unison, and In B j i they poured. It is the first time Mr. Miller has- B e j I been lfonored by having society supes, but there B III was no other way for the. two first nighters to B y 1 see the show. aB r?! PPH j & j t J Bi f f ! I see that Mrs. Cornelia Baxter Tevis has B ' If f broken into print again, and made a fool of her- B ii I self generally. There are few people in the coun- B if, ' try who crave constant notoriety, as much as this B! (, f I young widow, who is spending her summer at Bar B ii j ; i Harbor. Sensationalism is her long suit, and B i! ner Press agent is a pippin. Below is the latest B , story contained in a special: H 11 B ' : ' "Lieutenant John R. Edie, United States Navy, ILH iff made a call on Mrs. Cornelia Baxter Tevis at her cottage here one evening a week ago. As a : sequel to the visit the lieutenant is undergoing b hi ) a court-martial, after endeavoring to r "ticipate fl f i j in a duel with Ernest A. Wiltsee, a friend of the B J i widow. Mrs. Tevis, whose husband was Hugh B ' w' Tevis, the young California millionaire, and who B ' f. t is now only 20 years old, declares Edie offered her aH I HI m n an insult." PH Hi f ' iC t 3C IB u- "Captain Emery of the battleship Indiana and ( f ; ' the board of officers are seeking to discover just k 1 1 ' J to what extent, if at all, the Lieutenant was guil- ;jj j' ty of conduct unbecoming an officer and gentle- ' 'M r man, as charged by the complainant. Lieuten- . Jhil ant Edie has gone on naval maneuvers, while B pu' ! Wiltsee has been persuaded to go to Boston by Bj jp ' friends that separated him and Edie at the Kelso Bi VAl ; Valley Club dance on Saturday night last, when Bj till ' they were prevented from meeting on the field of K 'Sf jf' ' honor only by their inability to agree on the B f ll 4 , chpice of weapons. LaBi T.sf ' B m fl "Mrs. Tevis has her sister with her at her B II if ! I cottage here. One of her friends in the Navy is B I i , j Lieutenant Courtney. It was he who took Edie B i ' l I to call upon Mrs. Tevis and Miss Baxter. It aB ! ) i B I I appears Edie got the impression that there was B fjjt . to be a lack of strict conventionality, and that B jM , j he and his chum were to have a lively evening B L ' ' ; with the western beauties. Very soon after the B ' introduction he is said to have seated himself fa- B i A j -miliarly on the arm of Miss Baxter's chair." O iX c A "Wliether anything was said at the time or B I whether the impulsive Lieutenant was frozen out B I III of the cottage, is not made public, but the next B I u i ft day, Mr. Peters, a close friend of Mrs. Tevis and B , I a her sister, was sent to the battleship Indiana to H' hsffl lodge a complaint with Captain Emery with the B ! idea of having Edie dismissed from the Navy or B ' i ' severely reprimanded. B F If ' Captain Emery ordered an inquiry. A board of B i officers met and took the testimony of Mrs. Tevis H " and Miss Baxter and of the two officers, Court- B ney and Edie. The inquiry is not yet ended. It B s , is saicl in naval circles that the prosecution of K "I Edie .before a court-martial for this offense is B b ill absurd. B $ ' & : What a little fool this Denver beauty must be. It wouldn't be a very difficult task for a Irldy to squelch any one who had insulted her. The most humorous thing in the whole article is the lady's age. 5 v The devotion of this boy Stone to the Fifth East beauty is truly beautiful. They went to the theatre Tuesday evening, then drove to the McCor-nick McCor-nick residence, where Harry met her at the gate, - then back came the devoted to escort her home. Knowing ones have named him and the Captain Nip and Tuck. ty t That charming hostess, Miss Anna McCornick, made such a success of her beautiful dancing party par-ty Tuesday evening. It was easily the event of the week, and one of the largest and smartest affairs af-fairs of the summer. The McCornick house and the spacious grounds, make the place ideal for entertaining, and such was the party on the lawn Tuesday evening. even-ing. The grounds were completely screened and radiating from the house to the screening, and scattered about among the trees, were clusters, and festoons of tri-colored lights. The dancing floor was arranged in the rear of the house, and Held's band helped the dancers with the latest waltzes and two-steps. Beside the cleverly arranged ar-ranged settees under the trees, there was a convenient con-venient grotto in the basement which meant a great deal to the men. The affair was one of the rarely delightful functions of a gay summer. O 5 The best visitor's day at the Country Club for many a month was that on Thursday for the fun of which the Bachelor Maids, and some others were entirely responsible. The arrangements were perfect, and I noticed they carried their point, and had the "eats" served contrary to Roberts' rules of order, and the reverend, rever-end, grave, and noble seniors who maLe the laws. Please, girls, more days and nights like Thursday. O w The postman who covers South West Temple street tells me that a letter from Boston arrives every morning, and that is not the only circumstantial circum-stantial evidence. Her best friend tells me that after one more trip to Boston we shall see her here only as visitor. It will be too bad if they do not live here, tor she's a sweet, popular girl, whom we .all like. And by the way, what does the heart-breker heart-breker at home have to say about it? 5 2r O Miss Peery of Ogden will give a large lawn party par-ty in that city in the near future. There are no prettier grounds in the state than those surround-Irig surround-Irig the beautiful Peery mansion "Virginia," and the dance will be the event of the summer in Ogden. Og-den. V tV Even if thirteen people did set down to the Walter Stone dinner at the Country Club on Thursday, there was just as much fun as if another an-other had been present. And it was a .beautiful little dinner, with, masses of fragrant sweet peas and large bunches of red and white carnations forming the decorations. After the dinner the guests enjoyed the dancing until midnight. t tJ 3 J Mrs. Albert C. Allen entertained at a musicale last evening. Mrs. W. M. O'Brien is hostess at the Country Club next Saturday. Nothing doing today, but a table d'hote dinner at 6:30. The Misses Kinney entertain at a lake party . Monday evening. BHHjnflH |
