Show As Mr. Cannon has always been ready to glVe the helping hand to Mr. Kearns whenever that remarkable statesman was In trouble, It was not to be wondered at that he was ready to assist him in the present emergency. Besides the wishes of Mr. Cannon and Mr. Kearns are identical they both defclre the defeat of Roosevelt and the Republican Re-publican ticket. But there seems to have been a still more vttal reason for Mr. Gannon's unheralded support of the American movement. For some few weeks, particularly within the past few days, it has been apparent to everybody that the party originated by Mr. Kearns was on the decline d state of af fairs which was far from pleasing to leading Democrats, Demo-crats, who naturally based their faith in Democratic Demo-cratic success in the perpetuity of the new movement. move-ment. They saw no better way to bolster it up than by cnlling upon the agile Mr. Cannon of multifold multi-fold political faiths, in order that the new party might be afforded new enthusiasm and be dowered with some semblance of Democratic support. Mr Cannon had other motives for joining the new movement, but it is not unlikely that National Committeeman Henry Peery had something to sny about his switch Into the alien fold. Peery, ns the leader of the local Democracy, and a strong advocate of the election of Judge Parker, is not unmindful un-mindful of the benefits his partv is receiving from so valuable an adjunct as the American party, and if he did not incite Mr. Cannon to bis pseudo-rebellion pseudo-rebellion against "church influence," it is at least more than likely that Mr. Peery views this reinforcement rein-forcement with a great deal of gratification. The Democrats and the Americans should naturally na-turally work together and are doing so. It is reported re-ported that secret conclaves have already been held between leaders of the two part'eo Why not? That is thn question being asked by Republicans Repub-licans who are opposing the plot to dofaat the state and county tickets and the Roosevelt eloctors. |
