Show THE "NEWS" ON TITHE-PAYING. If a man pleases to pay tithing to tho Mor mon, or the Episcopal or any other church, that Is his business. While thousands and tens of thou sands of eastern capitalists will pay a premium to obtain 2 and 3 per cent Government bonds, and a man in Utah or anywhere else pleases to pa) 10 and oftener 12 per cent of all his earnings an nually to a church, that is his affair. It rests hP tween him and his own conscience, and no one except such as are depondent upon him, or whose business is affected by it, has any kick coming But when the News gravely Informs a wonder Ing world that tithe-paying under the Mormon system Is not compulsory but entirely voluntary, then we a11 nave a rIsht to consider how much truth there is In the statement. Of course in one sense tithe-paying, being baptized, joining the Mormon Mor-mon or any other church is voluntary. But where the rank falsehood of the News, comes in Is in the Impression which it puts out, that a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, may refuse to pay tithing nnd still remain , in good standing in the church. It is fresh in the memories of us all who were here about the time thel temple was nearing completion com-pletion that a Bull was issued by the head of the church which was nothing less than making the paying of tithing compulsory on pain of having withdrawn some of the dearest privileges of membership mem-bership in case of failurel It is in the files of the News, if we remember correctly, with editorial endorsement. "We suggest to the News that it republish re-publish it and then show editorially in the same paper that tithe-paying is entirely voluntary. |
