Show COIVIING DAWN. Joaquin Miller's latest poem contains the following-tribute to the legs of the fair daughter of the Golden State: M "How natural, how free, haw fair The while the happy winds on wing, As larger butterflies, laid bare B A rippled, braided rim of white B And outstretched ankles exquisite B What ankles, legs, what everything B That makes great woman great and good B That makes for noblest mottierhobd. B Such legs as mount the steeps of morn', ' B Such legs as love, nbt lust, may share. B Such legs as God has shaped to bear B The weight of ages, worlds unborn; B Such legs as Lesbian shrines revealed B When comely, longing mothers kneeled; B Such legs as Milo dared to hew B And all the clean world longod to view; B Such legs as Millais loved to draw B When painting tall, Greek girls at play; fl Such legs as blind old Homer saw, I As Marlowe knew but yesterday I When Helen climbed once more for him Tho cloud-topt towers of IHum." That is all right. It was about time that legs received some attention from the poets. They B have been hanging around the neck and bust long I enough. Fresno Mirror. |
