Show G0LF. The approaching and putting and driving contests Saturday brought out a larger field of contestants than has appeared so far this season. Every one, scratch players and beginners, tried for the approaching approach-ing and putting prizes, and some really remarkable scores were made. Mr. Sharp's 18 for the six holes, I think, will come close to standing for this season for contests of that kind if they aie played on the lawn. Miss narkness' 24 was the lowest score turned in by the women players. She also carried off honors in the driving contest for women, with a total of 8 points. Mr. Leonard introduced an innovation in the latter lat-ter contests, by which accuracy in driving counted for more than occasional long distance drives. One notable feature of the driving was the lack of distance made by the women contestants. Even H Miss Ilarkncss, with her beautiful low professional I swing, failed to cover over a hundred yards. Mrs. Sharp and Mrs. Keith, though getting their drives I away cleanly as a rule, covered oven loss distance. I The chief difficulty appeared to bo that most of the H ladies unconsciously straightened up in swinging the essential follow through. Strength counts for but little lit-tle in a drive under 140 yards. A cleanly hit ball, with a good follow through and the weight of the body behind it, should nearly carry the bunkers for the women. Nearly all those topped and sclaffed drives lcsult from the loss of stance caused by the straightcnening up on the swing. That awful fifth hole on the crest, where so to be improved by a wide trap bunker placed on the edge of the gulch. At present the chances arc about even of ever finding a ball that rolls down the hill. The trap bunker a prevent this, while sufficiently penalizing an over approach. |
