Show THE BLOODY EAST. Now the news is that Russia and Austria have determined not to interfere, and will permit Turkey Tur-key and Bulgaria to settle their own differences. If this is true it means merly to permit the massacre of some thousands, or tens of thousands thou-sands of helpless women and children and poor peasants in their sheds with all the accompanying accompany-ing horrors of Turkish atrocities. It is needless to say that such a decision is a disgrace to the civilization of Europe. It is a notice that Russia and Austria have not yet decided what satisfactory satis-factory partition they could make of the conquered con-quered territory. The disgrace is not all theirs, it extends to Germany and Great Britain, for tho world knows perfectly that in case a partition were to be proposed they, too, would insist upon helping to name the terms. When in 1878 Russia had Turkey whipped to a finish and would in a month more have had Turkey's power smashed in Europe, Germany, France and Great Britain called a halt and the treaty of Berlin was the result, which wrenched from Russia most of tho fruits of a victory fairly won and gave to the Turk a new lease of power and a chance, so soon as her bloody arm was a little rested, to begin again her murders. Russia is right in saying that if ever again she renews the war and achieves another victory she will not be cheated out of it. All the same the present situation is a disgrace dis-grace to Europe, to Christanity, and we hop6 that the Congresses of the United States for fifteen years to come will vote generous contributions for the navy which our country will need by that B time, for the day is surely coming, when for the B peace of the world and in the name of justice, fl our country will have to asume her real position fl as a world power. |
