But tell mo really, don't you think that real friendship means peace." J "Of course, but why do you ask." "I was just thinking of some ladies I hav met in this city. You know at home, we don't gossip, and we do not consider it an act of friend-v friend-v ship if an intimate friend of an intimate friend ; ' hastens to tell you of the nasty things someone has said of you. And not only that. Bf WttM S "Can you imagine such a singular state of af- Hiiiilfi B fairs?" mm rum 1 "It is possible. Thero used to be a woman here who said to anyone retailing something that had been said of her: 'Never mind, please, that woman has been a friend of mine and I should dislike to hear anything which might cause me to treat her differently.' " "Of course, if all women would submit to such heroic sacrifice as the missing of a little story, your Arcady might be realized." "Don't you think they will?" "Hardly." "Well you'll help, won't you?" "In the cause of peace?" "Certainly." "Thanks, good night." "Good night." W Vy i5 The Alta Club mutuality reception given in honor of the members was a large and brilliant affair, notwithstanding the exclusion of those of the earth that were earthly. From the pale grey etherial heights of their rendezvous, the members mem-bers looked scornfully through their bolted lattice lat-tice at the Bhivering world outside, and then danced and feasted and basked in the smiles of beautiful women till the hours of the owl. And those who bade the nobles enter were Mrs. Holmes, Mrs. Filer, Mrs. Fenton, and Miss Park chaperoning Mr. Burley, the president. 5 tffi c5 Speaking of the ball to be given by the matrons, it is said that three black balls will cut a man's name from the invitation list. Therefore, query: If three black balls will cut a man's name from the invitation list who will be left to take the ladies to the party? & w O The Leap Year dance, given by twelve young ladies at the Ladies' "Lit" last evening, was one of the cleverest and most novel affairs of the new year. The girls shouldered well their gentlemanly gentle-manly responsibilities, calling for the men in carriages, and taking care of them during the evening. One or two of the gay boys learned what it meant to be wall flowers, but all had a most delightful de-lightful time. The girls proved themselves most gallant, and the men propose to let them do the honors the rest of the season. The affair was in charge of the Misses Zane Geddes and Burke. w o ? The very pink tea given by Mrs. W. W. Flagg on Tuesday in honor of Mrs. Jack Jevne, was the largest and prettiest afternoon affair of the week. About a hundred guests enjoyed the event, every ' detail of which was beautifully arranged. Assisting Mrs. Flagg were: Mrs. David Mur- I ray Mrs. A. 0. Ewing, Mrs. O. W. Powers, Mrs B gm'edley-Smith, Mrs. George McDonald, Mrs. Robert Smith, Katherlne Judge, Leta McMillan, and Dorothy Kinney. B jn tiie evening the Rob Walkers entertained at dInner for Mr. and Mrs. Jevne. H tJ cv B Only one complaint has been registered by any B 0j tiie young men invited to the leap year ball. Babcock gave a luncheon for fl Mrs. Harvey on Thursday, -with covers laid for fl eight. K i3 3 flj Judge and Mrs. Powers will give a formal B house-warming at their beautiful home in Popper- B ton on Washington's Birthday. The affair will be B in the afternoon, and is expected to be the larg- B est event of the day. The Powers house is one of Bj tho most artistic in the city, and the""wprmlng" flt will be in keeping with the surroundings. Bj 6t g t B The Country Club is a cosy rendezvous for tho Bj sleigh riders these chilly evenings. Charlie Ward Be was in town on Monday, and three of the girls B took him out to tho baliwick on the hill, so the fl other girls couldn't grab him. There were six B In tho party. B 3 i Bl Dr. and Mrs. Roy Hampton are here from BR Mexico, visiting at the home of Judge and Mrs. Howat. And, by tho way, thero is a tiny Miss Hampton over whom her parents are receiving congratulations. & & Mrs. L. C. Miller and Miss Olive Jennings gave a splendid recital, followed 'by an informal reception re-ception at tho First Congregational Church on Tuesday evening. Tho event was one of the most pleasing events of the week, and a great success throughout. & & & Gertrude McCllntock, who is the guest of Mrs. George M. Downey, will remain here for some time. Delightful news that, for Miss McClintock is pretty and charming, and new girls are scarce. The right sort of an entertainment is that being given by the Joe Youngs, who in tho car "Wasatch" left on Tuesday for the City of Mexico, Mex-ico, taking a numbor of friends for a vacation of three weeks, to the land of romance and sunshine, sun-shine, and bull fights. Those fortunate enough to bo numbered among the guests are the William Iglehearts, the Clifford Pearsalls, and Mrs. Kenneth Kerr. t & & Mrs. Clarence Warnock entertained at a delightful de-lightful card party on Thursday. Mr. and Mrs. W. G. Lamb entertained informally inform-ally Fyftay evening. Miss Lawson entertained the East Side Card Club Tuesday evening.
