Show POLITICAL PROGNOSTICATION. Many wise opinions are being expressed these days regarding the probable successor of Reed Smoot in the Senate provided that body decides that the Provoite is not a proper person to fill a Senate seat. It is generally admitted that if the verdict Of the stern-faced eastern statesmen is against him, he will still have sufficient influence with the Mormon legislature to name his succes sor. It is taken for granted that in this connection Mr. Smoot will recognize one of the most stalwart captains in the recent campaign, and with that in view the names of E. H. Callister and James H. Anderson stand out luminously distinct. A feeling of resentment will naturally permeate tho breast of the apostle if he is thrown out by the senate, and many of his friends believe that his retaliation will take the form of hurling someone back more objectionable than himself. It cannot be denied that with either of the aforesaid gentlemen gen-tlemen victorious, the situation would not be viewed as any enviable triumph for those who assisted as-sisted in the ousting of Smoot and the selection 'would scarcely be greeted with turhultuous applause ap-plause from Utah Gentiles. Others Incline to the belief that Mr. C. E Loose would be his choice, although leading Mormon Mor-mon politicians believe that a member in good standing of the dominant church would be chosen as his successor. One certain fact is that ex Governor Gov-ernor Wells would be bitterly opposed by Smoot if he came back bereft of his senatorial plumage Recently a close friend of Senator Smoot announced an-nounced the Arm belief that neither Anderson or Callister would be favored by the senator, and that if he is expelled Congressman Howell will ro-celve ro-celve his ardent support for the place. This latter lat-ter version does not appear unlikely in view of j the distinguished services Howell performed in Cutler's behalf in the recent memorable campaign. cam-paign. Under the circumstances, there' will be little margin left for speculation within tho next few weeks. |
