Show Anent Mayor Appointments, It seems fairly safe to predict that a wide Chechire smile will mantle the face of the mayor when the proposal of the six Kearns Republicans' lecommending a distribution of patronage utterly at vaiiance with the mayor's slate, is submitted. The mayor's list of appointments provided for places on the municipal staff for nine Democrats and seven Republicans. Of these appointments nine were for heads of departments which have patronage to distribute, of which the Republicans were to receive five, thus making the division be tween the two parties about equal. Senator Kearns' fi lends In the council spumed the mayor's list because the names of P. L. Hino3 and L. C. Kelsey did not appear on it. They villi make a counter proposition, hugely endorsed by the Shifty's organ, offering the mayor three fle partments which carry patronage streets, health and cemetery. That seems passing kind, partial lady as the mayor can secure control of these departments de-partments without any deal with the five diplomats. diplo-mats. The present city sexton Is about to retire voluntarily; the health department is now con trolled by the mayor as chairman of the board of health and the commissioner has no power to distribute patronage without his consent; lastly the present superintendent of streets is being regained re-gained in the department at the request of tho leaders of the Independent Republicans and by the wish of the mayor, and consequently he should be on good terms with that official. The proposition, viewed as an effort to fairly divide the patronage between the mayor and the city council, is silly and puerile. The Kearns men could with far better grace have resolved to unite P in the defeat of all the mayor's appointment?, If rather than offer him with much flourish so infinl K tesimal a morsel. I The majority of the committee to whom the B mayor's appointments were referred, Preece, Har I tenstein and Barnes, will recommend their con H firmation. Hobday and Davis, the minority, will I rebel and launch the Tribune slate. I The whole matter will depend on the attitude I of Councilman Wood, whose support is claimed bj both sides. I |
