Show PANAMA CANAL ITEMS. Bradstreets gives some information calculated to incite a good deal of interest In different sections sec-tions of this country. It declares that before work is started on the Panama Canal, the Government Govern-ment and its contractors will be in the market for $125,000,000 of material and supplies. It summarizes sum-marizes some of the Items as follows: Steamships Steam-ships and barges, $5,000,000; dredges, $2,000,000; engines, machinery, oils, etc., $12,000,000; lumber, $1,000,000 ; coal and other supplies, $1,000,000; horses and mules, $500,000; medical stores and outfit, $500,000. We suspect that the $125,000,000 should be $25,000,000, for if $125,000,000 is needed to make a beginning, where would the end be? The $125,00,000 would construct a tide-water canal 1 through the Isthmus a few miles beyond the present pres-ent line, and wo think the Government should order one more examination before beginning the gigantic work. |
