Show t 1 I ELDER TAYLOR TAKE THE STAND. Iff " Elder Taylor, in the Tabernacle last Sunday, l t rushed to the defence of Apostle Smoot's citizen- H L ship. He declared that the situation was exactly lj I described by the Savior when he said, "Render Hi ft 1 1 unto Caesar the things that are Caesar's and unto B Jj I God the things that are God's." B j k That remark was made simply on a question B H of whether the Messiah advised the paying of Ii 3 taxes by his followers or not. But he did not mix j- 1 if n the politiqs of Judea. None of his disciplo3 HI m U were candidates for ofllce. He distinctly declared B, ;jj U cthat his kingdom was "not of this world." Is the H l jj m case a parallel one? Let Elder Taylor take the fjS'fi l' stand and testify. v v H The first question is: "Elder Taylor, what is Hj jf M w your belief?" Will he not be obliged to answer B 1 It that: "We believe in a celestial kingdom, and a H ff v w kingdom of God on earth." H i1 J $ The second question is: "What is this kingdom of God on earth?" B : J 1 $ Will he not have to answer: "It is our tem- B ; .tjjf ponal kingdom the one through which all our B !; f earthly affairs are guided and directed." B ffitfl if Third question: "Explain that guidance and I direction, please." B C n Will he not have to answer: "It is this way?" B ft! if 'Jj God made the world, it is his, he has a right to H w; lj r rule it. In his latter dispensation he raised up a if , prophet and gave him the right and power to rule 1 I ; in all things temporal as well as spiritual. This prophet was God's vicegerent on earth. At his death the authority descended directly by regular succession upon his successor and the present president stands in God's place in the estimation of all Mormons." Fourth question. "This rule goes into your personal affairs, you obey it in your business, when it comes to voting, you vote as counseled, do you not? Will he not have to answer "yes?" Fifth question: "You have a president and courts have you not?" Would he not have to answer "yes?" Sixth question: "Suppose a case. Suppose two men of your faith should engage in a law suit in your state or in the United States court and after a fair hearing under the rules of law prescribed pre-scribed for such trials, one should obtain a judgment judg-ment against the other, and the one who lost should appeal to one of your Church courts and the judgment should be reversed. What would be the status of the case then?" Would he not have to answer, "The decision of the Church court would prevail?" Seventh: "If you believe your President is God's vicegerent here, suppose there were to be a clash between your government and the government govern-ment of the United States on a purely temporal question, which would you obey? ' What could he answer? Eighth: "What is the chief est duty of Apostles?" Apos-tles?" His answer would have to be, "To build up the kingdom." Ninth: "Where your kingdom is established and you have no opposition, what is the form of your government?" Of course he would have to reply: "A pure theocracy, and our mission is to convert the world to that rule." If Apostle Smoot is a true citizen of that king dom, will some expert explain how he at the same I time can give his highest earthly allegiance to 1 the government of the United States, or on what II ground he "is entitled to a seat in vne senate of the H United, States? |
