J II i(u1 Miss Salisbury started tha giiyety of the week I ll ' with a dance for a large number of her friends 1 t on Monday evening in honor of her brothers' i I guests, Messrs. PItzman of St. Louis, and Mr. I!' t 1 Newman of Buffalo, and she will also be one of 1 j the hostesses at the County Club this afternoon I with Mrs. L. C. Miller and Miss Laura Sherman, 1 in a way providing a start and a finish for a 1 1 midsummer week which with the exception of 1 1 ( , several rather informal events has been as quiet I j as a morgue. ! A surprise party that was a greater surprise I than the originator anticipated was that given by I i Mr. J. M. BIdwell in honorof his wife, who re- jl ' ' x cently returned from a trip to California. ! ! 1 f Mrs. Bidwell left with Miss Nason for a trip to R il Los Angeles about three weks ago, and started tji on the return trip a week ago yesterday. In the I t I meantime Mr. Bidwell thought it would be nice m . I j to drop down to California, and surprise his bot- j , ( ter half. He said nothing to anyone, but like our j ' ' friend the Arab, silently stole away, taking the 1 !s train for California on Saturday morning. Mrs. ', Bidwell arrived here on the morning of the following follow-ing day tq find that she had passed J. M somewhere some-where out in the Nevada desert. As a promoter of successful surprise parties, Mr. Bidwell is an unqualified un-qualified success. Are we to have the bridge craze at last? The , j ladies who are playing it are so enthusiastic these warm mornings, that the game promises to become an epidemic when the winter evenings come. The Ujpi men should really discourage it, for It Is hard B If i; enough gathering a surplus during the week to IT' ante away on Saturday night, without being H !i obliged to furnish the wherewithall for the ladies B to distribute at a game of bridge, where one miibt B be a good sport, and where no guardians are al- m lowed. H v j & Hj , The big Ringling Bhows will be here on Wed- H,,,! nesdsy, and innumerable parties have been ar- V ' ranged to go to the big tent and give the animai Kj a treat It is to be hoped that the circus horses, WM t , bedecked in their flamboyant colors, will not be Sr jealous of the other prancers wearing those giddy H twenty-four horsepower automobile veils. H ! I & & H , ' " Again you may stroke the willing manes of iHpj ' '- the social lions, bask in the smile of Prince Hk' 1 Charming, and be regaled with the caustic com- Hjjj H ments of the two compatriots. "Clarence and Bfji l Henry" have returned to Zion, the one from L ! Paris, the other from Esopus, and though they ar- B rived within a few hours of one another, there K ' j was no noticeable disturbance of the elements Hk i I understand that the Parisians were not dis- V I appointed in Clarence, and that the Esopusans Hl were highly delighted with Henry, and it is a Htf ! matter of sincere congratulation that they both B '' returned heart whole, and willing to give our fair H,i ones another chance. Henry crossed the conti- B j' ' i nent purely on political business, and Clarence H went to Paris to see about a mine. After their K( k U I I J1LJ..-M. ' . How hard Nedward jumped on them when he heard the cheerful news is not yet a matter mat-ter of record. j JC & Another wedding of note which will take place i In the fall is that of Miss Edith Crane, daughter j of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Crane, and George Elmer Walker.
