Show Goshen and His Haltering Rams &?e Ogden K lection. Ogden, Oct. 16th. It appears from the press reports that Salt Lake's latest importation from Ogden, the Rev. IDlmer E. Goshen, has been using a battering ram on the orthodox religion with the astounding result re-sult that the infallible tenets based upon the divinity di-vinity of Jesus have been laid up for repairs. The assault was in the nature of a modern readjustment readjust-ment of the creed that has been tottering on the brink of the grave since the thinking world concluded con-cluded to accept facts as opposed to the fictions of theology, and what Goshon did not do to the relics of superstition is not worth the "telling. Of course it will be difficult for those of us who have been nursed in the faith to swallow the compound dose of science and religion prepared by Goshen, M. D., but without doubt the after-taking sensation will be most agreeable. We are to believe that the martyr of Calvary was the greatest teacher and leformer of his time, and that only which is as it should be. Next we are invited to shake off the mysterious comprehension of a baptism that is tantamount to being born again and we can do so without a sigh for the dear departed. Again we are to expect no more favors from an en-thioned en-thioned tyrant who is supposed to have decreed a vicarious atonement as the open door to the happy hunting grounds. This matter also may be arranged, we hope, to the satisfaction of those who still clung to the old Hebrew idea of squaring squar-ing a crime by letting the blood of an ox, without showing exactly the details of the arrangement. The idea is that we progress. There are few, too few, Goshens, and still fewer who have the istiength of righteousness to fight the dogmas of a bygone ignorance where they should be fought inside the church. This man Go'shen is at once a radical and a conservative. He sees the need of E a cieed that will meet 'the requirements of rea-u- son and truth. He knows that to live and thrive the church will have to discard the ancient marvels mar-vels that did such good service before Magellan demonstrated that the earth was round, and he is prepared to preach accordingly. And why not. The struggle for mental freedom cannot be made too easy. "With the old phantoms and myths in the ash heap, the way to the summit of human knowledge will have been cleared of its mightiest might-iest barrier. And the renovation cannot come too soon. Let us all pray for Goshen. May he never falter in his self-imposed task of throwing the searchlight of truth on the delicate canvas of the human soul and may his supply of electricity never run out! t5" 5 The primaries of Thursday and Friday evenings even-ings were awakening from a long political sleep. The preliminaries were anything but startling, the ward councilmanic fights being the only diversion. di-version. The Republicans elected delegates who will vote to continue in power the present administration. admin-istration. The Democrats pursuaded some of the unterrified to go to the city convention in the hope of getting a crowd smooth enough to induce a number of their own kind to accept positions on the ticket. The Republicans are sweetly confident of another victory. The Democrats are hopeful. The Republican baked meats wil furnish dainties for the Democratic funeral. w t5 0 The campaign will be waged on the question of a "wide open town." .It is not probable that either party could get a respectable hearing on the cavernous corpse known as the waterworks question, and the remains will not be exhumed unless the Democrats leave the band wagon for a hearse. The early symptoms all point to a fight on the administration for governing the city according ac-cording to up-to date ideals. In other words the Democrats will attack Bill on his slot-machine-. gambling-saloon record, and that is their supply of campaign powder, complete. Unfortunately for i M those who delight in pyrotechnics there will be ,9 no newspaper opposition to Bill, save a cry F( jfl once-a-week from Littlefield. The news- li SH paper, which appealed to the Democrats on the WM ground that it would take a hand in the fight, h B and theroby acquired much prosperity, will not jfl get' action till Santa Claus comes, so the chances f fl for a newspaper war have gone glimmering. The fl town is Republican and with all the advantages I '9 of a party that is "in," the G. O. P. managers r fl feel that the election will be nothing but a ratifi- f fl cation meeting. This view is also shared by some Democrats, those who thrive and prosper in the I 9 running of a "wide open town." 9 |
