Show THE FIRST CHRISMAS EVE. "Twas the night before Christmas, and Eden was still," Except where the Serpent was writing a bill For ten pounds of pippins (fair weight by his scales), And some gossiping monkeys were spreading their tales. Some parings and aRpJ&oargs lay on the sward, And the footsteps rigjjt naar thorn were those of the Lord. Two fig leaves were, hanging beneath a large yew, With nothing yet in them but diamonds of dew. The full moon disclosad, in a thicket hard by, Our parents and part of tho first apple pie; Their night-clothe were marvels -of fashion and nt. Of diaphanous fabric not woven but nit. "Oh, Adam," said Eve, "I do hope we will get A necklace and collars we will, I just bet." "Quite likely," sneered Adam, "our throats we'll bedeck; Whatever we get, it will be in the neck." "Beastly pun," she returned. 'I just know that Saint Nick Will bring what I want; but I wish he'd be quick." 'That cider," quoth Adam, "has gone to my head. Saint Nick may. bo 'quick,' but I wish I was dead." And then they both slumbered until tho fair Dawn, Which was properly .blushing, awoke them next morn. They ran to the yew, and, with language unfit, They drew from each fig leaf a notice to quit. -Town Topics. |
