Show At the Republican rally to be held, at the Grand theatre next Saturday night, Hon. C. E. Allen wfll ber ix& chief speaker. Although Mr. Allen was one of the most prominent leaders of the old Liberal party, 'tie is one of the many distinguished dis-tinguished Salt Lake Gentile! who refused to be beguiled Into Mr. Kearns' society for the election of Democratic lector and a Democratic state ticket. J & "Another victory," said the Tribune edftpr-fally edftpr-fally on September 24th, "this time a double one was scored by the American party sentiment in the Republican convention which has just ended. Ml. Bitner was defeated in his aspiration on & polygamy allegation, and Mr. Rldeout's aspirations as-pirations fdr a' senatorial nomination wdre swamped on the same rook." All of which is true. It after all remained for the American party to recognize a- polygamist to the extent of making him a nomine 3 on the American party tioket, which voters are urged to "support as "a protest against tjho slavery of women," & j& & With the easily discerned intention of prejudicing preju-dicing Gentile voters against the Republican ticket, the bolting organ on Sunday violently abused County Commissioner. James H. Anderson Ander-son for alleged extravagant use of the pauper fund and for alleged discrimination In Its distribution distri-bution in favor of the Mormonsi The dissertation is quite as absurd as it is senile se-nile and laborious, and in making the attack, the malignant and malicious medium of the Democratic-American party contradicted every sentence sen-tence in an editorial of July 14th, in which County Commissioner Anderson was fulsomely flattered and defended against on aspersion which appeared ap-peared the day previous in the Deseret News. The organ at that time was under the sams managerial man-agerial control as at present, but its mission in 'the journalistic world was slightly different. At that time tho organ was measurably fair for political po-litical reasons, but it had In view the ever present pres-ent and predominating thought of Mr. Kearns' j possible re-election to the senate. I The editorial, which follows, affords the best j possible refutation of the acrimony of last Sun- I day: The County Expenses. "We consider that County Commissioner Anderson An-derson has made a complete and convincing showing show-ing of good administration by the Republican board of the finances and the general affa'rs of this county. It will be Impossible to contravene his statements or to deny the excellent work done. "Mr. Anderson shows that the actual increase in the value of propery is much more than the increase represented on the assessment roll; that the people are far more able to pay any given rate now than they were ten years ago, which all will remember was the middle of the disastrous Cleveland administration, when the country was in distress, business paralyzed everywhere, and industry crushed. He shows, further, that the Democratic commissioners had borrowed a very large sum of money; that the county was nine months in arrears in meeting its warrants, and was paying Ave per cent Interest on $185,000 upon this account, besides - the old warrants of ten years ago on furniture account. "Since the Republicans came into power, how over, they have paid up this $185,000 and fully met other warrants, placing current expenses on a cash basis. The Republicans have done fifty per cent more work on the roads each year than the Democrats did at their best. The county Infirmary In-firmary has been improved twenty-flvo per cent; a now county Jail has been built at Bingham; $40,000 has been spent in three years in sprinkling sprink-ling the roads, and more than $50,000 was spent last year on the roads. Electric lighting is being constantly extended; there is an additional district dis-trict judge, and the business of all the offices have increased fifty per cent in the ten years, ana this business is better done. "All these statements are true, and every one is aware of the fact. What an excellent showing it is, and how little reason there Is for anything else than commendation of the administration of the county's affairs by the present? commission-art!" commission-art!" That is the Tribune's estimate of Commissioner Commis-sioner Anderson when it was not infected by tilt Revenge Society virus. The trouble about the Tribune's invootivo of the last few day againSt Mr. Andargon is that Oomwitsioner H. N. Standish, the Gentile member Of thQ board, and chairman of the committee on health and pauper, has had charge of the disbursing disburs-ing f every dollar of the pauper fund. The Tribunals Trib-unals charge that the Mormons are receiving the benefit of unfair discrimination in the distribution of the fund is a gross and malicious misrepresentation. misrepresen-tation. Of the 104 lnmate3 of the county infirmary, infirm-ary, exactly 24 are Mormons, many of whom ar of indifferent standing. About 50 per cent of the inmates in-mates are transciente and of these at least one-third one-third are people who receive assistance from the Salvation Army and other charitable organizations. organiza-tions. The Tribune accuses the board of trading almost al-most exclusively with Mormon firms, and cites as an example the business done with the Willis-Horne Willis-Horne Drug company. In reality all the orders that firm receives from the county are placed by County Physician Mayo, and all infirmary business busi-ness is done exclusively with the Gentile firm of Godbe-Pltts under a contract. It is true that many of the inmates are voters, but that proves nothing. It has alwayB T)een the custom foi the inmates to vote, but the bulk of them were registered in 1900, before the incumbency incum-bency of the present board. The Tribune's strictures about the chairman of the board consist mostly of wanton misrepresentations, misrepre-sentations, beneath the dignity of a respectable journal, and are launched with the solo Intention Inten-tion of demaglng the general Republican ticket in the forthcoming election. |
