Show PM1GUI7CU By Earl Roe 676-2376 wearlroeyahoo.com With the warm summer we have had, I wondered if some of our city or county officials were trying to protect our spot as the butt of all the cold weather jokes by placing the thermometer for the Triple C sign in the ice box. Monday night at 11:45 as I was coming home after turning the sprinklers on at my field (I water at night to save water), the Triple C sign gave the temperature as a -17 degrees. I stopped to read it again to make sure I was reading it right. (We can freeze you or make you sweat with that sign!) Last weekend the descendants descen-dants of Byron and Nida Howard held a family reunion at the home of Lamont and Linda (Bardwell) Olsen.' The home was formerly owned by Lynda's parents, Mark and Flora Bardwell. (I still think of it as the Uncle Joe and Aunt Annie Houston home.) . Byron and Nida had nine children but only two are still living; however, family members mem-bers of each of the children were able to make it to the reunion. Grandchildren attending were Kent and Jenece Howard; Ramona Howard, Panguitch; Doug and NidaMae (Howard) Jensen (Panguitch); Vay and Jessie (Howard) Barney; Mark and Kathy Bardwell (formerly Panguitch); Lamont and Linda (Bardwell) 01sen(soon to be permanent Panguitchites); Scott and Kathlene (Bardwell) Douglas; Clark and Flora Howard, Panguitch; John and Diane Houston, Panguitch; and Gene and Catherine (Jensen) Adderson. Making up the rest of the group were 22 great-grandchildren and 27 great-great -grandchildren. Linda told me they have a reunion each year and used to hold it at different locations, but everyone wants to come to Panguitch so from now on it will be held at their home here. This is probably the reason Lamont has almost doubled the size of the original home and is still in the process of remodeling the interior. Lamont recently retired from the army with the rank of colonel and, as soon as Linda is ready to retire, they plan on moving here permanently. Our older residents will remember Linda's parents, Mark and Flora as Mark having a welding shop and garage in the building that Clark Howard now owns and Flora was our County Extension Agent for many years. It was the John Wilford Roe (my Dad) family's turn to host the Charles John Roe reunion this year and we held it at the family home which is next door to the Olsen home and parking spots were really at a premium. We express our appreciation to Lamont and Linda for allowing allow-ing us to use some of the vacant space they have north of their home. The next time we have our turn to hold the Roe reunion, we will have to get with someone some-one from the Howard and Bardwell families and try to pick different davs. My grandpa and grandma Roe had nine children but only the youngest, Aunt Verna, 93, is still living and she was the oldest old-est one of the extended family to attend the reunion. She said she plans on being in Escalante next year when Aunt Mary's family will be the hosts. We had planned on maybe 50 or 60 relatives rela-tives showing up because at the last two reunions not too many of the grandchildren and greatgrandchildren great-grandchildren attended. . Maybe it was because it was held in Panguitch (everyone seems to like Panguitch) and there was so much going on here but we (See PANGUITCH on page 5A) Panguitch From Page 3A ended up with well over 100 aunts, uncles, and cousins by the dozens. Of the nine children, every family but one was represented repre-sented in the gathering. One of Aunt Gomer's grandsons was here for the first time and it was the first time any of us had ever met one of her descendants. I am hoping we get some more new ones at Escalante because this is the place where Grandpa and Grandma Roe settled and all of there children were born in Escalante. (Lots of family history histo-ry here.) Everyone had a wonderful time visiting, meeting new relatives rela-tives and eating a lot of good food of which there was plenty even with the unexpected number num-ber of people. Fortunately I had a fireman's roast in reserve, but I was slow on the Dutch oven potatoes and onions. (Charcoal is much slower than gas.) We are all looking forward to our next gathering in Escalante next year. "Grandpa's beard - Was stiff and coarse - And that' s what caused - His fifth divorce" Burma Shave |
