Show Bryce Valley's Mustangs Win Overtime Thriller By John Yardley Klay Chynoweth and Damon Brinkerhoff made it count in overtime, while Lucas Ramsay was solid for four quarters, as Bryce Valley stopped Milford 73-72 in a big Region 15 win last weekend. Chynoweth finished with 15 points, including "ice-in-your-veins" free throw shooting in overtime, poured in 16, with key baskets down the stretch. Ramsay, a consistent scorer all year, pumped in 25 to give first-year coach, Eric Jessen, his first region win. It was a real fun victory for the Mustangs. In other games, Escalante stopped Piute 61-45, in a region win. Tyler McLemore hit 16, Nathan Lyman 14 and Terrence Mitchell 14 in balanced scoring for the Moquis. The Moquis lost a tough game to Enterprise in a match-up which saw Escalante struggle for offense, losing 50-31. Terrence Mitchell went for 16 as the only double figure scorer. Panguitch had a win all but wrapped up with Valley on the Bobcats' home floor, only to see a missed buzzer shot followed back in by the Buffaloes as time expired for a 46-45 win for the visitors. Clint Pollock had hit a critical three pointer to put the Bobcats up 45-44, 45-44, but with five seconds left Kip ' Goulding put back his own missed shot to lift the Buffaloes to a perfect league record at 3-0. Acey Burningham led Panguitch with 15 points. Panguitch had erased a five point deficit on a nice two and one by Bracken- Englcstead and Pollock's heroics , before losing at the final horn. Valley also got by Bryce Valley last weekend, winning 68-54. The Mustangs are playing with a great competitive spirit, but fell in this one. Lucas Ramsay banged in 16 and Brandon Mecham scored 14 for BV. Wayne stopped Escalante 53-40 over the weekend in a busy series of games for the Moquis. Terrence Mitchell and Tyler McLemore were the leading scorers with 12 and 11 points respectively. When the Moquis get' some balance in their scoring, they are hard to stop. In girls' play, Escalante had a nice win, 58-33 over Green River. Katie Griffin and Elisa Cottam each went for 12 points, while Ashley Bodily scored 1 1 and Jennifer Lyman hit for 10. (See SPORTS on page 5-A) SPORTS From Page 3-A Piute stopped Bryce Valley girls 47-30, with Crystal Chynoweth the only player hitting double figures for the Mustangs with 10. Bryce Valley girls play at Panguitch this week. The number-one-rated Panguitch girls lost to arch-rival Wayne at Bicknell 49-43. The loss was the first in the last 20 games for the Lady Cats. They actually held the current longest winning streak in the state, prior to this loss. Kali Taylor, a very talented player, scored 26 to lead the Badgers. It was a sweet win for Wayne, having lost the last five contests with the rival Bobcats. Camille Cristensen led the scoring for PHS with 20 points, while Laura Boshell scored a dozen. The loss was a case of missed opportunities, especially easy shots missed that cost the Bobcats. Panguitch rallied back at the SUU Tournament to smash Park City 42-27 on Friday, as Christensen made 14 and Lacee Leach 9. On Saturday, they pasted 4-A Payson 67-17, getting back into their scoring rhythm that was seemingly lost lately. Christensen went for 16, Leach for 13 and Shelly Hatch scored 1 1 as most of the Bobcat players scored a few hoops each. |
