Show Escalante News By Marlene Haws 826-4859 Postmaster Beth Hunt and I, Marlene Haws, retired Postmaster, spent last week in Salt Lake City attending the National Postmaster Convention. Beth had to attend all the meetings and seminars while I, on the other hand, having been-here-done-that, was able to pick and choose some of the more relaxing fun things. Shirlene (Spencer) Roberts, Ruidoso Downs, New Mexico and I shared a room and got lots of visiting done. Shirlene and I were in the same class in school and graduated from the Escalante High School together, never dreaming that we would both become Postmasters one day! She sends greetings to all who knew her and says there will always be a soft spot in her heart for Escalante. Jessica Whitefield's parents, Dave and Raylene, Las Vegas, Nev. brought her to Escalante to be baptized in her grandparents, Arnold and Deon Alvey's LDS ward. She was baptized a member of the LDS Church by Brent Cottam. Her cousin Chad Cottam, who is only two days older than Jessica, and his mother Patrice Cottam gave talks on baptism before Jessica was baptized. Former resident Sherrill Haws and wife Pat are excited to share the news that grandson, Derick Haws, has been selected to play with the boys 1997 USA National Softball Team. This team will represent the United States at the championships in St. Johns, Newfoundland, Canada in July 1997. Derick, not quite 16, is an outstanding athlete and has been chosen most valuable player a number of times. The Hawses reside in Kearns. Lane and Geraldine Liston met with the Danny and Sherri Meisenbach family of Orange, Calif, at Grand Canyon, Ariz, for their annual summers end camp-out. camp-out. They enjoyed visiting and seeing the sights and report that they saw a bear in that country too! City employee, Layne Woolsey, fell from the water tower while checking the city water and landed on both knees. He was taken to the hospital in Payson where he had to have surgery on one of them. Hope you heal quickly, Layne. Marlow and Christa Schow had son, John Schow and two children Eric and Aubrey of Smithfield here for a visit. Aubrey thought it was very exciting to eat at the cafe where there were real live cowboys. The Schows also had daughter and son-in-law Christine and Paul Hatch, West Valley City visit for a few days. The senior citizens had to be split into two groups in order to attend the last play of the summer at Hale's Theatre in Grover. Deon Alvey took the first bus load on Friday which included Velma Boulter, Clella Woolsey, Leah Griffin, Thelma Marsh, Lester Mendell, Iona Alvey, Vernon Spencer and Max Porter and they picked Neta Poulsen and Renon Peterson up in Boulder. Marlene Haws took the second bus load on Saturday which included LaRue Spencer, Rolain Alvey, Twila Mclnelly, Clorene Vidrine, and Loreta Spencer. They picked up Idona Haws and Veda Behunin in Boulder. On the return trip this group stopped for dinner at the new Boulder Mesa Restaurant in Boulder, which opened about three weeks ago. Good food! Sheila Wooley will be displaying her paintings and art work at the Escalante Public Library during the month of September. Everyone is invited to come and see it. The library board is still asking for aluminum cans to raise money for library expenditures. Cans can be dropped off at the library. Stephanie Coplin, Boston, Mass. and Malinda Mecham, Las Vegas, Nev. paid a surprise visit to their grandparents, Starns and Fon Mecham. They are the daughters of Ron and Linda Mecham, Las Vegas, Nev. Stanley Stowe has the same birthdate as his grandmother, Orilla Cowles. His mother, Margean Schow, has a birthday just two days before. So Stanley and Marlene invited them to their house for a combined birthday party dinner. Bart Carter and family were there, also Twila Michelangelo, Orilla's daughter who was here from Richfield. Jared Noyes, eighteen-month-old son of Nephi and Heidi Noyes was taken to the hospital in Panguitch, then on to the Utah Valley Med. Center in Provo, after being kicked in the face by a horse. Last report they had gone to get his stitches out and he was doing fine. Pat and Bobbi Coughlin are the proud grandparents of a baby boy, Brandon, who is the son of their daughter Trisha. Congratulations! Jay Porter is back at his old post as crossing guard at the elementary school. That had been the job of Glover Smith for the past few years. The family of Roland and Mina Porter met at the home of Verjean and Carolyn Porter for a family reunion in celebration of Roland's 100th birthday. Dave and Yoland Mclnelly, Mesa, Ariz, had 12 of their family here which included Kay and Jody Brooks who live here. There was a grand total of 63 persons. They read a history of Roland and spent an hour or so just reminiscing, then I'd guess they had enough good food to feed an army. Aunt Mina would have been proud. She was always a good cook. Ben and Renee Porter had all their kids here again. Jim and Shelley Olsen brought friends Dr. Richard and Marcell Moss; Coy and Tricia Porter and Bryce and daughter Jayna all of Provo and Charlotte and Norman Johnson, Orem. Charlotte's two daughters Kelly and Jamie stayed two weeks after which their parents came and got them. If Ben could find a way to keep them all here he wouldn't have to go back to Provo every winter!
