Show Br MKBrr BBB WSm- '' JMI E 15 f f C Panguitch Babe Ruth Little League team members posed as the "winningest team ever" to come out of Panguitch as they took first place for the southern Utah region and advanced to play at state last week in Richfield. Shown are (back row) Casey Christensen, Landon Fullmer, Brett Sawyer, PANGUITCH The Panguitch Babe Ruth Little League team of 1 1 and 12-year-olds took first in the southern Utah region this month and headed to Richfield last week for state playoffs. Coach Rick Burningham believed this was the highest level ever attained by a local ball team in previous baseball history. The twelve-member team, coached by Burningham, Arlin Sawyer and Paul Callies competed July 8-13 at the Sevier Valley Applied Technology Institute in Richfield against 16 other teams from across the state. Winning their first meet against Wellington and advancing into the championship champi-onship round the young men fought hard but lost their final playoffs with Delta and Orangeville. Earlier in July the same team traveled to Beaver for the Southern Acey Burningham, Easton Perkins, and Adam Howard. Region; Competes At State Utah Region playoffs which were held over a four-day period and included in-cluded eight separate teams. They advanced into the championship round there beating East Millard and went on to defeat Virgin Valley 10-4 10-4 to take the number one spot. Burningham pointed out that "this was a very cohesive team this year with good outfielding and defensive de-fensive by all twelve players." In the first game of play Brett Sawyer, Casey Christensen and Kasey Owens all drove in home runs. In the final region game there was "great offensive play at the plate, and a back to back home run by Acey Burningham. Also there were great pitching efforts by Devin Englestead and Acey Burningham. Of the state playoffs Coach Burningham noted that the team "crushed" Wellington in the first game but both sides fought hard in their second game against Delta, with Panguitch losing by one run. The final game was against Orangeville and sea-sawed back and forth with the score 0-0 until the fourth inning. At that point Acey Burningham broke out with a home run and the game stayed tied to the bottom of the sixth inning. Orangeville beat by one run in the bottom of the sixth. All three coaches expressed their pappreciation for the enthusiasm and hard work by team members throughout the season. They felt greatly supported and were equally pleased with the family and fan support throughout the season. |
