" . i -: : i i h. i 1 - L - Daniel Thompson Paul Shakespear Brit Twitchell Cherlynn Twitchell Bryce Valley Bryce Valley Bryce Valley Bryce Valley Seventeen County Seniors Vie For Sterling Scholar Honors Seventeen students representing Escalante, Bryce Valley, and Panguitch Pan-guitch High Schools will compete for awards and honors in the 20th Annual Southwest Utah Sterling Scholar competition at the Dixie College campus on Apr. 2. Students this year will be honored to have Max Rose Academic Aca-demic Vice President of Dixie College serve as Master of Ceremonies Cere-monies for the Awards Program, which will begin at 7 p.m. Rose is a native of Henrieville. 1998 Sterling Scholar Candidates A banquet will be held at 5 p.m. prior to the awards program, to honor the Southwest Utah Sterling Scholar finalists and their parents andor guardians. Randy W. Wilkinson, president, Wilkinson Wilkin-son Electric, Inc., and Ace Mechanical Me-chanical Contractors in St. George will be the guest speaker at the banquet. The 14 categories of competi tion this year are: English, SpeechDrama, Mathmatics, Social Science, Science, Foreign Language, Lan-guage, Applied Technology, Agriculture Agri-culture Science, Family, Consumer and Health Sciences, Business and Marketing, Music, Visual Arts, Dance, and General Scholarship. Each of the 166 finalists will be judged on evidence of personal achievements and awards compiled into their portfolios and on their (See SCHOLAR on page 5-A) Sterling Scholar From Front Page interviews with the judges. The finalists will be judged on their ; scholarship, up to 50 percent; ; leadership, up to 25 percent; and ; citizenship, up to 25 percent. ; There will be three judges, from ', local communities, Dixie College, ' and Southern Utah University, in each category. ; A winner and two runners-up in ; each of the 14 calergories will be - announced at the evening program, :: and each will be given a Sterling Scholar pin. Finalists from each high school will receive an embossed Sterling Scholar ; certificate. Colleges and universities in ' Utah are offering full tuition scholarships to the winners and ' many are offering part tuition ' scholarships to runners-up.
