Show Spruce Bark Beetle Activity Intesifies ESCALANTE Earlier this year, Forest Service personnel observed increased bark beetle activity in the Engelmann spruce forests in the Coyote Hollow area of the Escalante Ranger District. Following investigations by resource specialists with the Forest Service confirms that conditions within the Coyote Hollow area have changed. The loss of large Engelmann spruce is now occurring throughout the area and there are places where the spruce bark beetle have killed all of the Engelmann spruce. The outbreak has the potential to drastically reduce the number of live Engelmann spruce trees in the area, creating conditions similar to those on Cedar Mountain of the Cedar City Ranger District. |
