Show Hyrum Parley Coleman Hyrum Coleman Celebrates 80th ESCALANTE The 80th birthday of Hyrum Parley Coleman was celebrated by 55 members of his family on Sept. 14, 1996. He was born Sept.- 4, 1916 in Teasdale, Utah to Parley Franklin and Esther Peterson Coleman. He was one of 14 children which, listed in order of birth, includes Bessie, Hyrum, Edna (deceased), Ada (deceased), Fern, LaFay, Barbara, Leah, Frank, Gay, Dan, Don, Jerry and CIo. Reared on a farm in Salt Gulch, Utah, he attended schools in Boulder, Escalante and Bicknell. While serving in the Army during dur-ing WWII, he was captured by the Germans and held as a prisoner for five months. He married Mary Ellen Heaps Mclnelly on Dec. 18, 1952, a widow with six children: Cleva, Donna Rae, Douglas, Lynn, Irene and Valaree. He enjoys being a grandpa to 24 grandchildren, 52 great-grandchildren and five great-great-grandchildren. After retiring from the U.S. Forest Service in 1981, he continued contin-ued raising a few cows and farming. He still finds great satisfaction and joy from tending to the animals, fields and garden. |
