Show School Lunch Workers Honored Individuals at several local area school food programs received recognition in June from the American Amer-ican Heart Association and American Ameri-can Cancer Society for reaching standards in line with their dietary recommendations. Recognized with achievements of "two-fork and three-fork" awards were: Koami Delange at Antimony Elementary and Elaine Matthews and Karleta Riggs at Panguitch Middle and Elementary schools. Cited at Escalante High School with a "one-fork" award were Lillian Lil-lian Coleman and Dixie Mitchell. The awards show that schools in Garfield County are going the extra mile to provide lower fat, healthy meals. The award program is part of an educational effort that has reached 1 ,600 school foodservice employees throughout Utah. Participants learned how to reduce fat and increase in-crease fiber in school meals without altering the appeal of the foods to children and teens. "We want to assist children in developing healthy eating habits . that will prevent the number one and two causes of death: heart disease dis-ease and cancer," says Judy Grint, member of the coalition. Organizations involved in the project include: American Heart Association, Utah Affiliate, American Ameri-can Cancer Society, Utah Division, American Diabetes Association, Utah Chapter, Utah Department of Health, Utah School Foodservice Association, Utah Dietetic Association, Associa-tion, Utah School Nurse Association, Associa-tion, Utah Office of Education and Utah Department of Health, Utah Beef Council and Dairy Farmers of Utah. Financial sponsorship was provided pro-vided by GoldKist, Hobart, Dairy Farmers of Utah, Utah Beef Council Coun-cil and the Utah Office of Education. |
