Show Escalante Men With PhD's Graduate High School ESCALANTE Back in the 1930's students were allowed to complete only three years of high school and then go on to college immediately without graduating. Both Voyle Munson and J.C. Haws, Escalante native sons, did just that...going on to Branch Agricultural Agri-cultural College (BAC) in Cedar City, now Southern Utah University. Univer-sity. They each completed two years at BAC and graduated from Brigham Young University (BYU). Subsequently neither individual received his original high school diploma and due recognition at a high school graduation. The Garfield School District desired to remedy that situation and last Thursday evening, following commencement com-mencement exercises at Escalante High School, each man was honored and awarded with his official offi-cial high school diploma. Munson received his bachelors degree and became a merchant, first in Marysvale and then in Loa. He later went on to get his PhD in education edu-cation in 1970 and worked for the Utah State Board of Education until retirement in 1970. He lives with his wife, Lillian, in Bountiful. Haws taught in the Uinta Basin area for nine years after graduating from BYU. He also completed his PhD in education and in 1969 became be-came superintendent of Box Elder School District, where he served for 19 years. He is now retired and resides re-sides in Brigham City. Both men were pleased and delighted de-lighted by the kind gesture of the local school board as they received their honorary diplomas and both were cited for their continuous contributions to education throughout through-out their lives. |
