Show I' ' JC1ST STUFF BY)fiti It has always been a mystery to me why we have Leap Year. February is not one of my most favorite months, and why anyone would want to tack an extra day on it is beyond me. Let's face it, by February all your Christmas bills have caught r up with you, it's close enough to j tax time to start to worry and, jj while the days are getting longer, it's still winter wooly weather. But, t with February being the shortest month, that's the most logical place to poke it. i ! I'm sure if I asked someone in : the know, or even took the time to open my Britannica Junior, I could find a scientific explanation as to why we tack on that extra day. I'm sure it has something to do with the Earth's axis, its rotation, the length of the days and the position of the stars, etc. At least that's what the encyclopedia encyclo-pedia would say. But I think I've discovered the real reason for the extra day every four years. First of all, every four years we I have the Winter Olympics. I realize j that most of the medals, if not all, are awarded by the end of the month, but an extra day is needed for the poor athletes to recover, not to mention the people attending the games. So, an extra day of recuperation recuper-ation is provided. Have you ever noticed that our j presidential elections, held every i four years, fall on the year of the leap! Therein lies the true reason we have the extra day to provide an extra day of campaigning for the I presidential candidate. i Why, an extra day provides one i more day that the candidates can tip I toe around the issues, one more day they can sling mud at each other, one more day they can finance through donations. It's one more I day the candidates' can worry about I the media digging up something ' from their past. But mainly, it provides one more day to confuse i the voters on any and all of the is-I is-I sues and that is why we have leap I year! I |
