Show THE GOODING BILL editorial tribune I 1 march 10 in the course ot of the next few days the senate will pass the gooding bill and the fate of this all important deac measure will then delie depend fid upon the house two years ago the upper chamber of 0 congress took similar action and the majority in n favor ot of the bill was overwhelming wh elming at that time the house failed to take action greatly to the disappointment of all classes in the intermountain country it Is a notorious tact fact that the railroads have discriminated against this section of the country in the matter of 0 freight rates ever since the first transcontinental tinen tin tal line spanned the united states even now they are not satisfied and have made a request to to the interstate commerce com that they be allowed to increase their freight tariffs by five per cent the gooding bill is designated to give the shippers of the mountain states an opportunity to exist an opportunity port unity they do not and cannot have been paying all the traffic will bear and then some tor for more than halt half a century they have been fighting against the iniquitous inequalities imposed upon them for many years and they are still fighting there never has been any valid reason why they should pay more for a short than a long haul and the practice cannot be excused upon any grounds whatsoever were it not for the discriminatory practices of the railroads salt lake would undoubtedly have a population of halt a million aud and her manufacturers jobbers merchants of all classes live livestock and wool growers agri culturists and mine operators would be highly prosperous spokane and ether inland cities and towns also would prosper as never before and the entire region would make substantial progress the railroads themselves would make much more money under a policy of live and let live than they are now squeezing out ot of discontented and protesting shippers the entire utah delegation in congress will fight for the gooding bill As was said in the opening paragraph of this article the measure will pass the senate and be sent to the house or final action in the lower branch ot of congress it il will meet with opposition fostered and engineered by a powerful railroad lobby owing to the fact that representatives from the more populous sections of the country have no direct interest in the controversy most of them knowing little and caring less about the up building of the great west the measure may go down to defeat as it did two years y ears ago there are hopes however that the more Intelli intelligent geni and farseeing far seeing representatives senta tives will get out from under the tha control of the lobbyists hobbyists and vote for equality under the law the vote upon the gooding bill will show just how many fair and unbiased representatives there are in the house A special meeting 0 tor for all interested in this measure will be held friday night at seven at the commercial mere al club rooms see ad on page three for particulars |
