Show News Captures Thirteen Wins At Utah Press Meet The Garfield County News captured eight out of 17 first place awards at the 1991 Better Newspaper Newspa-per Contest sponsored by the Utah Press Association at its recent annual an-nual convention in St. George. The News competed in Group I which includes 18 small weekly newspapers spread throughout the state with circulations under 2500. The News also took two second place wins.and a third place. All awdrds were accepted for publishers Jim and Katie Thomas by former Garfield County News publisher Mark Fuellenbach. Three new plaques and 10 new framed certificates adom the walls of the newspaper's new office's in Tropic, with most of the first place awards those most coveted in the trade. The News received a first place plaque for "Best Front Page." The judges comments were "well laid out" and "news variety was excellent." excel-lent." The front page that won recognition was the April U issue in which Sheriff Than Cooper captured cap-tured an Arizona rape suspect and a local Panguitch motel had a bomb threat. First place for "Best News Story" was won by the News for its coverage of the bomb squad detonating detonat-ing unstable nitroglycerin in Escalante, which judges acclaimed as "excellendy done." The News also captured a first place for "Best Feature Story" for its story about the capture of Bryce Valley's marauding black bear. A plaque for first place honors for best feature photo was awarded for a photo of three turkeys published pub-lished next to the newspaper's masthead on Thanksgiving. The last bird in the line asked "Does anyone know where this line is going?" go-ing?" Sports Columnist John Yardley shared in this year's honors, capturing captur-ing a first place for his popular sports column.
