Show I 1 SCHOOL OFFIC OFFICIALS ADVOCATE BETTER RURAL SCHOOLS A resolution passed favoring rights right Tit titles lesTo to school blands I lands in west pres coolidge speaks in a conference with supt bupt skidmore who just returned from the great convention of superintendents at washington D C it was learned that the school men of the whole country voted for a resolution favoring right and tair fair titles tor for the school lands of the west there is a feeling that some of the eastern states have participated in school lands grants to a tar far greater extent than have the states in the west tax burdens tor for school purposes would be materially relieved it ate amount ol of land appropriations for schools were made in the west as in the east besides all the leading school men of the convention speaking tor for the idea that our country schools should be built up strongly where the highest ideals of rural lite life might be maintained it seems that all of 0 the 0 outside speakers such as commissioner ti berf secretary work and secretary hoover were also very definite and pronounced in favor ot of better rural schools the lion hon herbert hoover remarked ked that almost any industry in the country might stop for five years without irreparable loss but in that this was not so with the schools which carry on the greatest business in the country our cities too must learn that their prosperity depends lipon the productivity of the rural sections the rural schools should be made the very best possible and through them should be taught the highest ideals of rural lite life pres Coolid address to the teachers was very much enjoyed although his talk was on the subject of george washington yet he paid the teachers the compliment of saying that he was also a great teacher this was his climax and concluding remark judge george sutherland made a wonderful talk to the uth utah teachers teacher in which he said it he were to try to advise the teachers of America what to do above any other thing it would be to place character education above everything else health character and safety education were stressed along with some twenty other salient topics ot of discussion in our modern schools an interesting debate took place on the advantages and disadvantages of 0 the platoon system or what is sometimes called the work play study plan consolidation of rural schools and the 6 3 3 plan were praised more highly than ever supt bupt skidmore was called into a conference with dr Dutter butterworth worth of 0 soon to give a survey 0 of the school buildings ot of only two or three districts in the state box elder has beene been chosen bosen as one ot of these and the survey will be part of the state school survey that Is now under way ile he was also given added encouragement from the direce tor ot of indian affairs of U S for a new school house tor for the indians at washakie Was hahie halde there were more than ten thousand superintendents at this great convention it held three sessions a day for a whole week and was generally regarded by school men as the best ever held |
