Minor Injuries In Three-Car Collision At Tod's Junction; Two Vehicles Totalled HATCH Occupants of the vehicles involved in a three-car collision at Tod's Junction on Friday, June 9 escaped with only minor breaks, scrapes and bruises but left two of the vehicles totalled. The Utah Highway Patrol was dispatched at 1:40 p.m. to the scene at the junction of U.S. 89 and Utah Highway 14. Jane Perkins, 62, of Iroquois, 111. was headed north on U.S. 89 in her 1979 Dodge van with her husband Elmer, 60, as passenger. Traveling south on U. S. 89 in his 1995 Pontiac Grand Am was Robert Hansen, 37, of Hcrdon, Va., his mother, Juana Hansen, 67, of Rockville, Md., as a passenger. Ashley DcMille, 25, of Fredonia was headed east on Utah Highway 14 in his 1984 Chrysler. He had stopped at the stop sign before turning south toward Kanab. In that vehicle was passenger Vicki Hooper, 27, of Kanab and Dcmille's two children, Chelsea age 6 and Courtney age 1. According to Utah Highway Patrol Trooper Gaylcn Moore, Perkins' van apparently made an improper left turn, turning early and cutting the corner, in front of the Grand Am. They impacted, and the Grand Am slid into the driver's side door of the stopped Chrysler. A small fire developed in the van but was quickly extinguished . Three ambulances and three wreckers were called to the scene along with several highway patrol troopers, police and fire department vehicles. The elder Mrs. Hansen appeared to be the most seriously injured with head and chest injuries. She and son Robert Hansen were transported by ambulance to the Kanab Hospital and are reportedly doing fine. Jane and Elmer Perkins were transported to Garfield Memorial Hospital in Panguitch. She had an apparent broken arm and he had facial cuts and problems with an ankle. The occupants of the Chrysler were also taken to Kanab for observation complaining of head and neck pain of varying degrees. Trooper Moore reported that occupants of all three vehicles were wearing seatbelts, perhaps saving them from more serious injuries. Mr. Perkins was not seatbelied, as he was moving back toward the rear of the van when the accident occurred. A citation was issued to Jane Perkins for an "improper" left turn. On the scene were UHP trooper Shane Nordfelt, UHP Sgt. Roger Cutler, Ordcrville City Police and Alton Volunteer Fire Department members. |
