Show Baseball, Volleyball Underway In Schools By John W. Yardley Boy's 1-A baseball and girls 1-A volleyball both begin this week for all three Garfield County high schools. Head coaches in Panguitch, Pangui-tch, Bryce Valley and Escalante have been trying to get players rounded into shape in baseball and volleyball. In baseball, Escalante Coach Jim Smith opens up once again with a very young team. Early in the week he was unsure about all positions, but plans on going with a pitching staff composed of any or all of the following; senior Matt Liston, freshman Gary Gledhill, junior Bryan Roundy, and sophomore Glen Hardison. The Moqui's open up play at Valley on Friday and then travel to Panguitch to play in a four-team tournament consisting of Escalante, Panguitch, Enterprise, and Wayne. Bryce Valley opens the season at Panguitch on Friday. Coach Clare Ramsay lost six starters from last year's squad, so will rely on some newcomers. Junior Cary Clark or sophomore Todd Feltner will start on the mound with the other one catching for the Mustangs. Justin Baugh, Eric Stout, Pat Clark, Mike Jensen, Mike Goulding, Trevor Stewart and Brady Syrett will be among team members playing the other positions. BV has been hampered, ham-pered, as have all the teams with bad weather. Their practice field has been covered with mud all week. Panguitch entertains the Mustangs Mus-tangs Friday and then hosts their four-team tournament on Saturday. Ryan Prince returns on the mound for Kay Englestead and Pat Dix, with Clint Barney handling the catching and being one of the team leaders. The Bobcats have among others returning to the team, Aaron Brinkerhoff, one of last year's leading lead-ing hitters and senior Jason Orton. A number of other players arc competing for the fielding positions. posi-tions. In volleyball, Carl Shakespear will coach the Bryce Valley girls as they resume Region 12 action. At Escalante Richard Crawford takes over the helm of the Moqui girls. In Panguitch, Ann Reynolds is assisted as-sisted by Heidi Miller as they lead a senior-laden team back into the thick of Region 12. Panguitch and Escalante do batUe today in Escalante. |
