Baldwin Honored With 4-H Leadership Award PANGUITCH Elaine Baldwin Bald-win is one of six Utah volunteers to receive the coveted "Utah State Farm Bureau 4-H Leadership Award." Baldwin and her husband Dale were special guests of the Utah 4-H Volunteer Association at a recent dinner in Salt Lake City where they also attended the Utah Farm Bureau Convention. Elaine was presented with a plaque in recognition of the 18 years of extensive and dedicated volunteer work she has done in her community. She has personally touched the lives of and given direction to many, as she involved, worked with, and supervised 4-H club members in community improvement improve-ment projects as well as regular 4-H club work. Included among those many projects was "Volunteer of the Week" in which 4-H club members interviewed volunteers in the community each week and sent articles to the newspaper for publication. publi-cation. The club entered a national contest with the project and won $100 to finance the group's next project, purchasing playground equipment for the park. For the park project, they constructed and installed swings, a climbing gym, sand box, riding "animals" and a "spinner" at Pan-guitch Pan-guitch City Park. They also developed devel-oped a live floral display in the box of a manure spreader at the city park to beautify the entrance to the city, and constructed a floral garden and city directory sign to inform visi- x tors to the city of service locations. Busy 4-H club members also installed a flag pole and tiled the rest center at the city's new offices and library building. They shipped some 200 books, provided by the Utah State Library Commission, to Japan as a permanent loan for Japanese youth to learn the English language. They developed and published a "walking tour" brochure of Pan-guitch Pan-guitch City to focus visitor interest on and buildings having significant and historical interest to native residents. As a member of the Panguitch City Council and Garfield County Library Board, Baldwin developed a grant application that enabled the city to receive $135,000 to purchase pur-chase and move into a new library building in 1994. She has also organized and directed many drama activities both in her church and her community. As a member of the local arts committee com-mittee for a number of years, she has been instrumental in bringing cultural activities to the community. commun-ity. She has been an inspiration to those around her and a model of energy directed into positive and productive channels. Extension home economist and co-worker Lucile Proctor says, "Elaine has the personality, intellect and humor to engage teenage youth in significant life improvement and leadership skills. It is easy to talk about what might have been, but Elaine has done it and the kids have enjoyed being there in the middle of it!" |
