Show Cage Battles Get Hot in Garfield ByJohnYardley Just when It looked like the Escalante Moquls were going places In Division One of Region 12, the rival Bryce Valley Mustangs came to Tropic and then left again with a 74-67 victory. Thanks Just the same, Mustangs. Escalante had hoped on placing highest in the county for region play. Now, however, Bryce Valley has the lead In cross-county play with a 1-0 record and Panguitch on the horizon this Friday on the Mustangs hardwood. Escalante is now M against county teams, while Panguitch is 0-1 with the defeat to Escalante at the Moquis gymnasium. Panguitch fell 1-4 in league play with a 63-56 loss to Gunnison at home on Saturday. In other games of last weekend, Bryce Valley fell to North Sevier 81-59 and Piute whipped Escalante 105-73. At Escalante, the score was tied at 20-20 after one period before BV pulled out to a 46-36 half-time lead. The Moquis pulled back to tie the game near the end, but excellent free-throw shooting by the Mustangs "iced" the game. BV hit 18 of 28 from the free-throw line while the Moquis hit on 23 of a whopping 39 from the charity stripe. Tim and Trent Feltner hit 22 and 20 points respectively for the Mustangs and young Shawn Chynoweth came in to score 16, Including 8 of 11 from, the foul' line in the closing quarter. For' Escalante, Clint Porter burned the nets for 24 and Ricky Crawford swished 18. Against North Sevier, the Mustangs got down by 10 early on and could never recover. Charles Henry knocked in 18 points followed by Tim and Trent with 12 and 14. Escalante could hardly catch their breath on Saturday aginst Piute. Despite scoring a respectable 73 points themselves, the T-Birds were just too big and overpowering. Clint Porter continued his great .scoring punch with 25 and great support was given by Matt Listen who pumped in 18 and Ward Coombs who had a career-high 17 points. Panguitch, meantime, cannot seem to And the combination to victory. The Bobcats only trailed the Bulldogs by one after the first period and by three at half-time. They actually went ahead just after the half began, but Gunnison pulled out to an eight point lead 44-36 after three and then hung on to win -despite a mad rush at the end by Panguitch. Heath Sartini had perhaps the "' greatest game of his career as he crashed the boards and played tough defense -while scoring 26 points, including a perfect 6 for 6 from the charity stripe. Nate Brinkerhoff scored 14 as the only other player in double figures for the Bobcats. The league standings now look like this after last week's action. Piute is on top at 5-0, followed by Gunnison at 4 -1 and North Sevier also at 4-1. Wayne then checks In at 2-3, with Bryce Valley, Panguitch and Escalante all tied in league play at 1-4. A special "Hats Off" to Superintendent Henry Jolley for his role in having the region tournament changed back to its original 13 teams. Dr. Jolley was very instrumental in making sure our county athletes, marching groups, and fans can make their annual trek to the round robin whether they are sporting glossy won-loss records or not.
