Show THE 1 J GORILLA A WONDERFUL PLAY salt lake tribune something great in the theater world was achieved last night A play lived up to its press 1 I he gorilla at the salt lake theater was not only all that was promised on the billboards and in the newspapers newspapers news but it was decidedly more from this y you au may deduce that we and the rest of the audience at the opening night of trie plays Onga engagement gement in salt lake liked it and not a little you may be a sophisticated and blase theatergoer and have seen mystery plays that thrilled and chilled but in the ver vernacular ac ular you aint seen bothin yet if you are one of those persons who definitely do not like mystery plays you cant dismiss the gorilla from plays you intend to see for its appeal as an uproarious comedy is as great as its spookiness all in all you cant in justice to yourself afford to miss it to even hint at the plot would naturally spoil your pleasure in the drama it is all the conventional mys tery plays rolled into one merely as flavoring for the distinct plot of its own let that suffice for now much of the mirth of the play lies in in its conscious mimicking of other mystery plays all the effects the hands the secret stairways the passages the unexpected doors queer lights gruesome sights which have graced other plays are kere acre but where the recipe called for one the cook uses his own discretion and puts in a dozen for good measure the rest of the fun in the pla play y comes from those two delicious characters mr garrity and mr mulligan they are you know it because mr mulligan tells you and mr air garrity backs him up with you said it these two aided and abetted by jefferson lee the negro servant and mr air simmons the newspaper reporter keep bright without a letup the spooks shooks and chills of the play are furnished by the gorilla and ana I 1 his cohorts while mr marsden ably keeps the suspense just where it should be the highly competent cast includes lon hascall harry T shannon bert kay jack C grey carl rosa thomas bell dr wilner julian noa no wilbur cox and oahn stokes the only feminine partin par ti the play is nicely done by F elizabe th t carmichael |
