Show Education Reform Committee Hears State Specialist State Board of Education Specialist in Physical Education Drivers Education and Health, Darrel Josie, spoke to the Panguitch Education Reform Committee, April 5. Josie addressed the new requirements set down by the State Board of Education. He said the major goals of the new requirements are to strengthen curriculum grades K-12, to enliven and enhance all classes, to eliminate "soft" -classes Vndn requlf "ail -students to have a mastery of subject beyond the basic level. Students and teachers must meet new standards and requirements. New student requirements are: 1) must take required classes that stress content and quality, 2) must master core competentencies in contrast to amounts of seat time, and 3) Formal assessment of mastery at grades 3, 6, 8, 10, and 12 must be made. Teacher requirements must be set into place by the 1988-89 school year. Teachers will not be assigned to teach required courses until they have completed an undergraduate or graduate minor or major, completed a State Board of Education approved inservice program, or demonstrate competency in the subject area. Student assessment must be passed on the 85th percentile in order to be considered mastery level. Physical Education will have a change in that it will no longer be called PE but will be Fitness Movement and Lifetime Sports., Students are to be trained to keep fit: ahd'stwwh1it6pafficrpaie1ft5P! only team sports but in golf, tennis, racquetball and other individual sports. |
