session bat at 9 and 10 in the morning and two in n the afternoon president de at norman lee lea presided at the various meetings and elders chas H hart and levi edgar young of 0 the first council of 0 the seventies were the visiting speakers the first session at 9 was attended by the stake presidency high council patriarchs and other stake and ward officers and the members of 0 the priesthood the morning meeting at 0 0 for the general public opened with the congregation singing now let Us rejoice under the direction of norman watkins invocation was offered by perry D peters and the congregation sang 0 ye mountains high dishop bishop abel S rich was the first speaker and discussed the sunday school drive the slogan ol of which Is everybody in sunday sunda y school november 1st ast ile he felt particularly interested in the drive not from a standpoint ot of figures but because of the influence the sunday schools have on our spiritual lives young people who do not attend the sunday schools and our other organizations be said are overlooking one of the greatest factors in the up building of their characters elder benjamin bowring who recently returned from the southern states mission and elder arnold peirce who labored in the western states mission gave interesting ac counts of 0 their labors in the mission field following elder dohrl Bo wrings address miss retta H hart express expressed ed hi his s appreciation of the singing and ap spoke oke of the great work being done by the elders in ge germany amany in bringing hundreds of the honest in heart into the church in re referring ferrin g to the dorkof work of bishop rich as seminary instructor jn in this community elder hart said that the world was just begin beginning nid to realize the importance of religious instruction he advocated advocat ei the he use of the dible bible in the schools and believed the teachers would bo be dairin interpreting the scriptures he quoted one noted educator as saying it we cant teach our boys and girls to be honest truthful and decent in our great modern schools we just as well dim dismantle antle our present system and go back to the little old red school house in a few closing remarks president lee stressed the necessity and benefit ot of short but well prepared speeches in referring to the habit ol of sleeping in church he be felt that sometimes he iter her beauty rise the general and stake authorities were presented and sustained miss gladys holton who recently returned from the northwestern states mission gave an interesting account of her experiences and bore a strong testimony to the truthfulness of the gospel president jos N stohl said he had appreciated the testimonies of the returned missionaries as given at the conference felt that their parents had been well repaid in the sacrifice made that they might fill missions our greatest reward pres prea stohl said la Is to see our children succeed in truth and righteousness as 0 the importance ot of stake officers living up to their duties those who are arc called to lead he said should be loyal to their callings and set good examples wo we should do our just duty to our church president norman leo stressed the importance ot of literally living the gos pel and having implicit faith in the promises ot of the lord to the faithful he said he was impressed with the importance ot of keeping the sabbath day holy we have had bad occasion to observe a tendency toward its non ob servance ler ser vance yince which has brought about a detonation in the observance ot of the laws 0 of god he said it seems to me he continued that latter day saints who have expressed their faith in the lord shiou should id not findig necessary to io work on the sabbath day when the law and the promises are plainly laid down in the scriptures the choir sang the anthem Ge hovas praise elder levi edgar young said ho he had found pleasure in riding up thru the valley and viewing the apparent prosperity ot of the people we have been truly blessed in worldly things he said we have some problems before us he continued do we really understand the youth and their problems ile he said that in fifty years we have seen the greatest advancement van cement of all the ages put together especially from a mechanical standpoint in mentioning some of these modern inventions he said it ig not the radio that is so important but the message that Is sent over it it is important that we conform our lives to this new age wo must realize that the youth are trying to adopt itself to this new age ho he said and it Is our duty to aid in guiding their 4 stops ate q along the right paths I 1 believe there Is more good in the earth than bad and more good ln in every eiery soul than evil he urged his hearers ti to dedicate their soul sto the service of god continuing he said 1 I believe there are two things that are going to redeem the world religion and education they go hand in hand we have left the teaching of our children to the church and the school and let the old fashioned home become a thing of the past we have let the children get away from the old fashioned teaching in adapting ourselves to the new aze age ile he said further that we should teach the children that the lord Is god and that there is but one god and help them to learn of his ways that they might better serve him elder hart was the concluding speaker he urged a stricter observance of the sabbath day it seems that the more we are blessed he said the less we are inclined to serve the lord he had observed that in homes where affliction was the greatest there was found a more abundance of the spirit of the lord he had found in putting over really big things that those who paid their tithing and were trained in giving were the cheerful givers he also stressed the importance of paying a full tithing and in keeping all of the commandments of the lord after tho the closing anthem it shall come to pass by the choir benediction was pronounced by heber W perry and the conference was adjourned tor for three months |
