Show Specialist Tells Of Cancer Warning Continuing efforts by the Garfield County Chapter of the American Cancer Society to educate about cancer brought Dr. Leonard Swinyer, Salt Lake City dcr-motologist to Panguitch in January 8 to speak to local physicians, nurses ,and professional staff at Garfield Memorial Hospital and the mem bers of the ASC local board. The Salt Lake City specialist and liis wife, are both members of the ACS Public Education Board for Utah and travel widely offering slide presentations on cancer. Focusing primarily on skin cancer, Dr. Swinyer told the local professionals that, as with all cancers, early detection is essential. With many skin cancers, patients have failed to seek help early enough as soon as they notice any skin blemish or change in pigmentation. Just to be on the safe side, doctors recommend a checkup when any noticeable changes occur on the skin. He told the group that the sun causes the majority of skin cancers, especially on the hands and anyone who spends prolonged time in the out-of-doors should use a sun screen. Sunscreens effectively block out potentially harmful rays of the sun while still permitting tanning of the skin. In higher altitudes those harmful rays are more intense, he said. Pamphlets are available at all clinics associated with the hospital free of charge. Board members of the Garfield County chapter of the American Cancer Society are president Elaine Gardner and Linda Blair, Nancy Houston, Annette Handley, Arlenc Davenport and Karla Owens. |
