Show ' 4 1 1 Pangultch Elementary Nanette Covington lJil Escalante High School -Paula Leibenguth Bryce Valley High School Sharon Munson Winners of the annual Deseret News Spelling Bee for fourth through eighth graders were annoucnced for six schools in Garfield County. Pangultch Middle School Peter Frandsen Bryce Valley Elementary Todd Feltner Escalante Elementary Julie Anne Carter Winners Emerge from Spelling Bee Competition in Garfield The contest is sponsroed in cooperation with the Utah Education Association, State PTA and the State Board of Education. Friday will see winners from throughout the county compete in the district contest to be held at 1 :30 p.m. at Panguitch Elementary School. Attendance at the meet should be resticted to contestants and their parents according to contest organizers because of the high degree of tension and need for quiet in order for those competing to be able to concentrate on the words they are asked to spell. The winner from Friday's meet will go on to state competition at the State Spelling Bee on April 16 at Clayton Intermediate School in Salt Lake City. In competition at Panguitch Middle School this year some 34 eager sixth, seven and eighth graders entered the contest with a seige of high-spirited competition lasting for 31 rounds of spelling. Again this year it was eighth grader Peter Frandsen and Seventh grader Jolynn Barnhurst neck and neck to the exciting conclusion. Jolyn Barnhurst dropped out on the 29th round when she incorrectly spelled "invincible". Peter proceeded to spell that word correctly and then went on to correctly spell the next word "Jadeite." Both Peter and Jolyn were winners i last year, with Jolyn taking first am (Continued On Page S ) Spelling Bee Competition (Continued from Page 1) going to the state finals. Also with a commendable record for competition in this year's contest were Eilene McKee, Monica Miller, Heidi Ilepworth and Annette Hatch all of whom stayed in until the 18th round of competition. Those involved in this year's com petition had special praise for Peter, the son of Mr. and Mrs. George Frandsen, who, with his parent's dedicated support managed to memorize the entire list of 520 words used in the spelling competition. Helping record statistics for this year's competition at Panguitch Middle School was Hazel Sanders. Pronouncer was Earl Roe and judge was Gloria Houston. Spelling Bee competiton at Panguitch Elementary turned up Nanette Covington, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Wayne Miller, as the official winner. Losing out to Nanette in a very tight race was Alisha Hatch, who missed on the word "debris." Nanette then spelled "debris" correctly and went on to spell "sanguine" to win the contest. Pronouncer this year for Panguitch Elementaey was Kay Hatch with Hilda Gardner again offering her volunteer effort as judge. Competition among sixth, seventh and eighth graders at Escalante High School was keen with eighth grader Paula Leibenguth, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Afton Leibenguth, taking first place. Competing with Paula were Vickie Crawford, Melanie Griffin, Tina Smith and Kerry Dean Shurtz. Paula correctly spelled "acquaint", missed by her competitors, and then went on to spell "agriculture" to win the contest. Pronouncer was English teacher Louise Liston with Hal Shurtz and Sharon Dale Marsh as judges. Winner at Escalante Elementary who will compete again at the district meet on Friday, was Julie Anne Carter, fifth grade daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Keith Carter. Julie Anne competed along with Lisa Leibenguth, Jill Griffin, Stephanie Griffin, John Catmull, Kristen Smith and Trisha Coughlin. She successfuly spelled "maim" when her opponent couldn't, and then went on to spell "malcontent" to win the contest. Pronouncer was Hal Shrutz and judges were Rual Jane Spencer and Shaiu.i Da;t Marsh. At Bryce Valley High School, winner in the sixth, seventh and eighth grade competiton was seventh grader Sharon Munson, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Alan Munson, Tropic. Sharon correctly spelled "debris" followed by the equally correct spelling of "lattice." Winner at the elementary level at Bryce Valley after competing against the entire class of combined fourth and fifth graders was fourth grader Todd Feltner. Todd is a son of Mr. and Mrs. LaMar Feltner, Tropic. Todd correctly spelled "evaluate" followed by the correct spelling of "fallacy" to win the contest at Bryce Valley Elementary. |
